Why do we write?

Take a look at the articles online. There's an obvious trend. Each article belongs to one of these categories:

The writer has something they are enthusiastic about and want to share it with other people.

The writer is trying to assemble something that can attract traffic and satisfy Google.

I think it's obvious which one is which. However, the second type is dominating the Web. It's not exaggeration to say that it's more than 95% of all articles. But why? Why does the audience allow it?
