Braid

My wife and I have been playing Braid together on and off the past few months. She played it as a kid and convinced me to get it on Steam. I don't know how but I've completely overlooked it until now and we're both having a ton of fun taking turns and working together to solve all the puzzles.


If you haven't played it, Braid is a puzzle platformer whose main mechanic is time manipulation. Time manipulation has definitely been done in other games, but Braid has an execution of it that I think is really unique and constantly throws new twists into it. It starts off simple with you being able to rewind time at will, but no sooner than when you feel you're getting the hang of that does it start changing and adding new problems into the mix. For example, one set of levels that I thought offered a really fun challenge linked time with your position in the level. Move right and time moves forward. Move left and time moves backward. Stand still and time freezes. A simple idea, but one that makes for some really fun, challenging, and rewarding puzzles.


While writing this I actually found out that Braid was designed by Jonathan Blow who was also behind The Witness, another puzzle game that I completely loved. Can't say I'm very surprised.


If you like puzzle games and don't mind platformers, definitely give Braid a shot. I think my wife and I are nearing the end of it and I'm looking forward to playing the Portal games with her next since she's never tried them. More to come on that probably.
