Steam Next Fest - Day 6

Planetary Life


The game opens up to pixel art UI. Didn't expect that, especially since I recall the screenshots not looking like pixel art at all. I'm intrigued if this will hit its mark with me, visually.


The music is pleasant. Mostly featuring a piano and a slower tempo.


Not going to lie, dropping a bunch of land in one place, forming a mountain, it looks like I just gave this planet a really bad zit. The snow makes it look worse.


It's still enjoyable so far. There are some features I would like to see in this game, but the startup dialogue was clear about what was missing. So I'm looking forward to future iterations of this game (demo). It's kind of soothing with the calm music. It's only stressful when I'm trying to populate the planet, or trying to get it covered in water. I should probably brush up on my Earth science knowledge!


I will say, this feels directly engaging compared with something like Universe Sandbox (2). Although I think US2 was meant to be more macroscopic in that you can create a bunch of celestial bodies and mess around with them. Planetary Life seems more focused on cultivating one planet.


So far, my first attempt at populating this planet has effectively failed. There may be some more left, but I think it's time I attempt to cover this planet in water again and go from there.

So, I pelted the planet with a bunch of comets, and of course the planet population spikes.

I might not know what I'm doing, but it's kinda fun messing around with the different stats and see how the game responds. I still haven't tried to repopulate it yet. Probably should and see how they respond on their own.

I do wish the game made it more obvious where I seeded lifeforms on the planet though. They want you to start in the water but there's no indication that they're even in there without clicking on each hex and hope a white screen with a tiny little green sprout (plants) and a temperature range. At least creating a new creature is more visible on the planet.


Anyway, I'm going to let the simulation sit and...wait a minute. The plant shifted a hex. That's interesting. I don't know if it's just doing it on its own or something else moved it.


All in all, I'm definitely keeping my eyes on this game...simulation?

Okay, I spent more time with this demo than I expected and managed to get flora and fauna flourishing. I also picked a spot to put down an artifact that improved reproduction, then replaced it with increased mutation. This game has gotten way more interesting now!


It would be neat to see, or for the game to add potential for life to propagate and evolve in more extreme environments. We know there are extremophiles near the scalding hot vents scattered through the ocean floor. Tardigrade (water bears) can survive the vacuum of space and be revived. So I don't think the idea of supporting these things are that far fetched!

One more day...


There are plenty of other demos I wanted to try but honestly, I'm sucked into Planetary Life now. I guess one could say it's like Spore (which I never played, I only gleaned some let's plays and screenshots) but you also get to terraform the planet to your heart's content. And you can do it in any order.


I hope those of you that read this enjoyed my stream of consciousness and impressions of these demos as much as I enjoyed playing and writing about them! I think honestly, only 1-2 games I written about I'm likely not getting. The chances for that to change is high too. I do seem to love collecting games. If the price is right and plenty of improvements were made, then I'll probably pick them up!
