You've got to find the right sort of place.

I've found that a lot of bars in the US aren't good for socializing, but a pub can be conducive to conversation over good food as long as you're not too close to the bar.

You reminded me there's a board game bar I've wanted to take someone to for a long time, so thanks for that. I've also found that speakeasies are generally a bit better than normal bars since they tend to be more secluded by design, though they're just as chaotic as bars can be during peak hours. :/
