I don't know modernism very well, but I don't think there is enough reason in this post to limit yourself to modernism. There have always been groups valuing simplicity over complexity. There are exceedingly complex (ugly) pots from some neolithic cultures, and simple (tasteful) pots from others. Were the latter early farmers modernists?
