Midnight Pub

Smol Pub notebooks

~m15o

"Thanks", I tell the delivery preson as they drop the last crate at the entrance. Right on time for the weekend! There's a little owl drawn on it. Below, it reads "Smol Pub".

For the past few weeks, I have been working on Smol Pub. It's a tiny service to keep a journal on the small net. You write from a web UI or CLI and have your posts reachable via Web, Gopher and Gemini.

While the Midnight is our little hideout to unwind and exchange with our favorite virtual cocktail, Smol Pub is our own journal. Our travel log. The one we bring and write on when sitted on the lounge. We don't write on it to engage, rather to introspect and reflect. Sometimes, we share a page in the pub to other patrons, but it's mostly for oneself. It's the home of our writings, a virtual pocket journal.

Both the Midnight and Smol Pub share a similar codebase and philosophy but while one is a message-board, the other one is a (b/ph/gem)logging service. Posts have a slug, the theme you chose is applied to your journal, and you can attach your custom domain and let Smol Pub takes care of certificates (even with https).

Midnight is invite-only, and Smol Pub isn't. I'm hoping it helps less technical-inclined people to get started on the small net and have their own personal space that's accessible from simpler protocols. Smol Pub is also a paid service. It's the first time I'm releasing something that has a price, and it feels strange. Just like Midnight, it's there to stay for the next 10 years, and charging for it is a guarantee that it's there to stay.

The Midnight already offers space on both web and gemini at username.midnight.pub, so do take a look at it if you didn't know! There's also Main Street, the street that's right next to the small alley where Midnight is located, that offers housing on web, gemini and gopher. And well, now there's Smol Pub that's there to not be there at all and give all the space to what you write. I hope you like it!

*Points to the crates*

Go get your Smol Pub notebooks!

And as a thank you for reading this, send me a mail and I'll give you a key to use it for free.

Cheers!

Seems like a decent blogging platform, although for those of us that already have one, I'm not sure there's reason enough to switch.

By the by, have you considered hosting an IRC server on the Midnight domain? I'd definitely hang out there....

I've got mine up.

starbreaker.smol.pub

starbreaker.smol.pub (web)

starbreaker.smol.pub (gopher)

It would be cool if smol.pub had a directory page, though. It would be fun to browse and see who else is there.
