Midnight Pub

Mixing emotions

~bartender

Lately I've been adding a dash of coffee in most of the cocktails I made for myself. It's all about proportion: you want to feel it more than you want to taste it. It tricks your brain into being more creative, and depending on what it's mixed with, can help patrons forget about the busy city for a little bit.

What if we could pour emotions into drink? A few oz of nostalgia in there, half a cup of euphoria, some absinth, stir slowly, add some ice, break the ice with camomille-infused boiling water. Hmmm, that'd be an interesting one!

Feeling down? Here's a shot of joy. Feeling anxious? Get some calmness. I'll bring it by the fireplace.

Speaking of fireplace. As I walk past it I notice a door I haven't seen before. Well, I might need a dose of courage to open it, even if my curent mood is curiosity. Upon inspecting that door more closely, I notice a writing on it. It says:

Hut By The River

I see Smudge is intrigued as well. Time for an adventure! I put my hand on the handle, twist it open and push. It's dark, so I step inside with Smudge by my side. The door closes behind us.

Have you ever crossed a portal? I haven't. But now, I feel like I have. A second ago I was in the middle of the city in a small pub. Now I'm in front of a hut in a sunny and bright place. Good to see Smudge is still there as well. This is what I see:

                               888 88888888
                              88888\88888888888
                             8888888\8|8888/88888
                             8888\888\|888/888888
           ######### 888\8\8|88/88888
         ############# 8888\88/8888
        ############### | |
       #######/ \####### | |
       ######| |###### | |
       ######| |###### | / |
     \\\\\\\/|/ \|\////////\/\\\////// \\\\\\///

Smudge and I are greeted by a bird-like figure who goes by the name of:

uirapuru

uirapuru welcomes us warmly and offers us some water that's been filtered from the river next to the hut. The place feels magical. Almost like we could hear the chants from the forest around. I sit down on the hammock for a little and close my eyes. It feel good being here.

I open my eyes but the forest and the hut and the river and the hammock aren't there. I'm back at the bar, Smudge taking some water. Was that all a dream?

"I hope you enjoyed the hut!" said the bird-like figure by the bar.

"I sure did", I reply to uirapuru.

I'm glad to see inquiry by the jukebox as brewed pushes the door open. Maya is chatting with unclereaton over her glass of chinotto. It's not quite the night yet, but the Midnight is filling up. Wait, are these opposums having a beer in the lounge?

I had outside for a little smoke. It's dark already but the street lights from the alley light the place. It's noisy, but that's expected in this city. edisondotme is there and we chat for a while. I notice manneken-trappiste.

Well, I've been experimenting with cocktails recently...

Wow, now I'm thinking of the various mysterious combos of emotion you could make, if only you had access to a whole bar's worth of distilled emotional states. What would "joyful nostalgia" feel like?

Glad you liked the hut :) I spend much time flying around and listening to different sorts of stuff, but these days the air is heavy, it is hard to fly, I don't like to be grounded for long. I guess I'll need one of your calmness drinks tonight. I'll be right here by the fireplace, and just hear the conversations around. Oh and please bring me a veggie sandwich if you have any, I know it might be weird for a bird but I really love sandwiches. And maybe even weirder, but I loved to meet smudge.

uirapuru is amazing. I once unwittingly attended a concert -- it wasn't really a concert, the bird just started singing because it's what birds to -- and all other birds went quiet so that they could listen. I know it sounds odd but I was *there*.

I don't know if it's the same uirapuru, there are either many of them or just one depending on who you ask.

Sounds like a drink with a promise!

Last winter I was wandering some streets in Spain one night and happened upon a brightly lit art gallery. It was a chilly night after a recent rain and the gray cobblestones shined orange from the sodium vapor street lights. Orange light drowns out color which made this art gallery stand out even more. The walls were adorned with colorful paintings and mosaics. The intense contrast between this colorful art gallery and the cold, dark street felt like crossing into another world.

I get a similar feeling, albeit less intense, whenever I head to bathroom at the back of a busy pub to pee. The quiet bathroom is a place to rest your mind for a bit before returning to the group. It's like those YouTube videos of songs with the treble turned way down to simulate you being in the bathroom at a party.

She left you last minute at prom so you’re crying in a school bathroom while Mr. Brightside plays
