Maintaining Simplicity While Acknowledging FOMO

As people can see from the “Gemini Helpers” section on my home page, I spent quite some time figuring out the best way to layout and structure my capsule and especially the gemlog.

The navigation was most important to get right. But while I had the right hunch from the beginning, FOMO corrupted it. Old habits or values from the WWW were still present. I bothered too much about the performative aspect: will people continue reading if I pointed to more content, or will they abandon the current page, because there’s no navigation link?

It took a while to acknowledge these feelings, while at the same time acknowledging the premise, that Gemini clients can take over and users are competent. Still it was hard to let go.

After all the twist and turns I applied to different page layouts, or different unicode and emoji characters, the difference in navigation and display while optimizing for TUI or GUI clients cannot be satisfied. So I did the what the Gemini specification strived for all along: I only have content on my pages and removed everything extraneous.

Again, it looks like, after careful consideration of all options, it seems best to choose the simplest alternative.
