This is a very informal terms of service, hopefully I should never have to formalize it.

Code of Conduct

Don't:

do anything that's illegal in the United States (as that's where I and my hosting provider are located)

try to deliberately disrupt the server or push resource limits

knowingly abuse or exploit the site with malicious links or otherwise malicious code

use Lasso for any form of harassment or to defame any individual

promote or participate in racial, ethnic, religious, political, or any other form of bigotry

participate in any form of spam

You also must comply with my hosting provider's Acceptable Use Policy for obvious reasons (most of the terms apply to what services I host, not what users of my hosted services do with them)

Rules will be enforced much more strictly for publicly shared articles—*especially* but not exclusively if a report about the content is recieved. Don't expect rules to not be enforced just becuase an article isn't public.

I reserve the right to terminate any account at any time, for any reason (including no reason). I also maintain the right to delete any article, remove public shares of articles, change objectionable usernames, etc.

Resource Limits

The hard size limit for a single archived resource is 50 KiB, or 51,200 bytes; hopefully in your normal course of usage you won't need to worry about this limit. Using data from the Lupa crawler, 80% of all resources on Gemini are ~12 KiB or less, and over 90% of gemtext resources are ~10 KiB or less. The limit of 50 KiB is *approximately* 25,000 words (assuming it's entirely text without markup) or about 50 book-pages of text, which is plenty for the kind of content Lasso is intended to archive.

If you're archiving **many** articles you may be asked to reduce your usage, just because the VPS I run Lasso on has relatively little disk space and I need room for other things as well.

You can always host your own instance if you find yourself running into the resource limits

If you're making automated requests to the site for whatever reason, rate limit your requests to one request per second for up to one minute at a time, or one request every ten to thirty seconds for longer periods.

Account Data

Export

At any time you may export the your data from your account through your account settings page. Exporting your data includes *all* of your account data, which may then be re-imported into another Lasso instance or translated into another format as you see fit.

Privacy

Lasso collects as little data as possible about you. In fact, there are only four pieces of data collected about you: your username (arbitrary and does not have to tie to anywhere else), your client certificate information (required for logging in), the date & time your account was created, and the list of articles you have archived (each with basic metadata such as the URI and whether it's archived or not). Your IP address is logged by the Gemini server, but it is not associated with your account and the logs are deleted every 24–48 hours.

The data Lasso does store is generally private, however I (nytpu) have full access to all data. I only look at the data tangentially when doing maintenence on the database and while debugging; the situation is similar to how the Pinboard admin describes it:

It's best to keep in mind that for literally any service where the data isn't encrypted locally on your device before leaving it, the privacy of your data is not in any way guaranteed; whether there's a security breach or simply someone with access decides to look at your data.

Account Deletion

At any time you may terminate your account by using the "Delete my Account" option in your account settings page. Deleting your user account will immediately and completely destroy all data that is associated with your account. As mentioned above, your IP address may remain in the server logs for up to 48 hours *after your last visit to Lasso*, but your IP is not tied to your account (and if it was, that connection would be deleted along with everything else in your account).
