Yes, usually green tea, AFAIK. Traditionally that would be Sencha or Bancha in Japan, and Gunpowder or Longjing in China.


Personally, I only drink green or white tea, as I do not like the mostly strong flavour of black tea.


Did you try Mate tea (not to be confused with 'Club Mate')? It is a herbal tea, as it is made out of Ilex paraguariensis instead of Camellia sinensis, but works pretty well with multiple infusions, too. That would be the South American equivalent for a staple tea drink. I certainly like it.
