Correction: In the part where I talk about corruption, it seems like I wildly overestimated how much Taliban soldiers get paid, although it's possible for someone to be paid that much depending on their rank, I feel it's more likely that the salary of the man I spoke to was less than $1000 but still more than what Tajiks make. I consulted with Easton on this matter, and he thinks even some Taliban volunteers don't get paid at all. There is also a widely circulated rumor in Afghanistan that the US is providing the Taliban with millions of dollars in weekly aid, but that didn't feel too credible unless it can be confirmed by a reputable source. So far, the matter is unclear.
