2022 Week 2: Thoughts and Photos

2022-01-17

I've mentioned in my log before that I use a homemade "microblog" script to maintain a personal micro journal. Yesterday I modified the script slightly to allow the user to cross-post to a twtxt file simultaneously. The function is quite barebones--the script writes the post to a dummy file and the user is expected to symlink his/her real twtxt file to the dummy file--but for purposes of implementing basic support, it works. The script is linked in the "Files" section of my capsule.

In autumn my wife and I scheduled a trip to Walt Disney World for April 2022. We'd fervently hoped the COVID-19 pandemic would wane by then, ideally to the point that masks and social distancing were no longer required. Unfortunately that seems to be a slim possibility at this point. We are likely going to reschedule the trip, if not outright cancel it.

As part of my effort to digitize my family's Hi8 tape collection, I put together a text file with all the tapes listed in chronological order by the first date on the cassette. Most of the tapes have timestamps throughout, which made the bulk of the work rather easy. For other tapes I had to use clues to make an educated guess about the date, such as footage of a birthday celebration or a school event. One tape, containing only a 25-second clip of snow in the backyard of my grandparents' house, has no date or context at all; I can only surmise that it was filmed sometime between 1983 and 2004.

Last Monday I visited a friend who owns two dogs. I'm allergic to dogs, so I naturally had a stuffy nose and watery eyes by the time I returned home. For the rest of the week I had constant mild to moderate allergy symptoms, despite a regular dose of over-the-counter-medication, also experienced intermittent shortness of breath: at a few points I needed to use a rescue inhaler, which is a normal side effect of allergies for me, but also a normal side effect of illness. I checked my temperature a few times and I never had a fever, but the symptoms only started to dissipate this morning after a solid week. Part of me wonders if I contracted a very mild case of COVID.

Our First Quiche

We enjoy crepes and often frequent a local creperie on the weekends. Recently we've begun baking and cooking more often at home, so my wife decided to try her hand at a ham and asparagus quiche. The result, soggy bottom crust aside, was absolutely delicious--and surprisingly photogenic.
