Status update for September 2021

In January 2019, I started a social network for Christians. It was a Mastodon instance called "There's Life". I initially set it up as an experiment. I had been trying out Mastodon and took up the challenge of setting up my own instance. I figured a few others might find it useful and join, but mostly it was a secondary project compared to what I thought would get more traction: my diaspora* instance, kingdompod.com.

A week ago, after two and a half years of being the primary administrator of the website, I decided to look for someone else to take my place. Shortly after I made a public call, my friend Jeremy (@jwinnie) offered himself to do it. That was a huge relief because I already trusted him and knew he was more than capable of managing the server and the website.

Shortly thereafter, I also locked myself out of my personal account. Both the administration and just using Mastodon caused me a lot of stress and anxiety. A break was necessary.

Because I left abruptly, some of y'all may be wondering what happened to me. Don't worry, I'm actually feeling better than I have in a long time. Over the last week I've been able to focus my attention on more interesting activities.

Jeremy and I have started the process of migrating There's Life from Mastodon to Pleroma with a Soapbox front end. We've gotten as far as installing Pleroma on the new server, but we have yet to finish the migrations.

I've also moved all of my personal websites and services from the There's Life server to my Raspberry Pi. I just finished that migration yesterday. If you are reading this anytime soon, it's being served from my living room. I've also been setting up my Pi so that everything restarts properly when it loses power and has to reboot. I got my first introduction to writing systemd services.

With extra time and mental ability, I intend to write more on my capsule and explore the technological capabilities of Gemini. But I make absolutely no promises! When I promise, I fail. I just hope to tinker and learn on my own time.
