I have a love/hate relationship with Google. I'm fairly deeply invested into their ecosystem of platforms and services, and I must admit I enjoy the convenience those services afford me. But I also hate the way Google monetizes basically everything (as well as hating most other aspects of the company), and I had that really hit me just now. I've lately been in the habit of putting youtube on when I go to bed. There's a large number of relaxing videos that make great background noise. But it being a Google platform, there's a commercial at the start of the video. Tonight, Google changed it up on me, and instead of a commercial presented a poll asking me what credit card brands I was familiar with. Something about there being a poll on credit cards instead of a standard commercial just really emphasized to me how crassly consumeristic Google is, and frankly it pisses me off.
