and the Butlerian Moment

===

This was the first part of an email I sent to a friend. For context,

I read my friend's bit in gmail, saw the suggested replies,

composed my answer in nano and then copied it over.

Your periodic report on what Boogle wants me to reply with. Here's

what the most brilliant organization of all time gives me to auto-

reply:

Wow! or Interesting.

And then I suppose Boogle thinks the conversation would then be over. . .

The Butlerian moment is coming, even if it is just children of billionaires

after some great events of extermination or slow-rolled placation (VR and

wonder-drugs as super bread and circus). The survivors of this epoch are

going to have every evidence they need that you can't give away your

judgments to machine systems.

Frank Herbert via Leto:

| Humans had set those machines to usurp our sense of beauty, our

| necessary selfdom out of which we make living judgments. Naturally,

| the machines were destroyed.

Boogle, and all of anti-social media, as well as anti-social commerce,

clearly sets itself up to be that usurper. Whoever is left with

freedom of movement will see the evil of it and find their ways of

avoiding it. Look at me as an optimist.

That gives some context to the struggle you are reporting in getting

thoughts together, and this makes me overcome my (very much conditioned)

instinct to tell you anything is fine as is, to just present the jumble,

and instead say that the struggle is a very important one to engage with.

You put it very well:

| I suppose it will become more and more and more important to kind of

| gather yourself back into some kind of coherence... I suspect we'll be

| perpetually in the crisis mode the pandemic has thrown us into,

| throughout the rest of the century's 'polycrises'.

At this stage of history, to write coherently is nothing less than fighting

for you soul. How pleasant, then, to be able to fight such an important

fight while in peaceful surrounding, drinking a bit of tea. The loveliness

of the process is actually one of the important parts of the rebellion.

I love to hear from people. My email is the handle minus "net" (so, a work

by Voltaire that starts with "c"), at sdf.org.

While we're adding boiler plate: this work is hereby in the public domain.

Do what you want with it.
