08:00 DaemonFC; I'm glad I bought that. You know, this goes with my theory that we all basically know what will happen in the future.

08:00 DaemonFC; Even on a subconscious level.

08:01 DaemonFC; I mean, think about how often I end up doing things that I had no time to plan for, but thanks to 5-6 things I did previously, I'm fine. Things that individually make no sense as part of a greater plan, but then it turns out that I needed to do things that way.

08:03 DaemonFC; I've always wondered about predeterminism, honestly. If that's not what's playing out. Like, we have no real choices and things will happen a certain way, and we only think we have choices.

08:03 DaemonFC; MinceR, Now, in the many worlds theory, there's a different universe for everything that has, is, or ever will happen, right?

08:04 DaemonFC; So if that is the case then we're not making choices. We're just one possible branch of reality where things have to happen the way they're going to happen in our branch.

19:43 DaemonFC; schestowitz_TR2, I'm writing a brief summary of the WSL malware problem and I'm going to mention that even Bleeping Computer is starting to call bullshit on this.

19:43 DaemonFC; Up to this point, I think we were the only ones mentioning Windows instead of saying WSL malware or Windows anywhere in the title.

19:44 DaemonFC; This stuff doesn't do anything at all on GNU/Linux because WSL is not GNU/Linux. It's an extension of Windows which is partially compatible. Unfortunately, as such, it massively extends the Windows API and gives malware what amounts to an unsandboxed system to run in that malware authors may feel more comfortable writing for. But I haven't seen anyone using it in production legitimately.

19:45 DaemonFC; Just kicking the tires because Microsoft paid them to do a puff piece about it.

19:46 DaemonFC; Of course, we knew all along that implementing a GNU/Linux system on top of a hypervisor was possible. CoLinux was doing it on top of Windows XP, and Microsoft wasn't even involved with that.

19:46 schestowitz_TR2; good

19:46 schestowitz_TR2; very relevant to us, DaemonFC

19:47 DaemonFC; But that's sort of like taking a Yugo and retrofitting it with leather seats, Bose sound system, and upgraded dash board and shifter knob. You get some nice stuff, but what's the point?

19:48 MinceR; "No Highs, No Lows -- Gotta Be Bose."

19:48 DaemonFC; People would think you'd lost your damned mind, because you have the interior trappings of a luxury sedan in an Eastern European economy car that puts out like, what, 70 horsepower? Very comparable to WSL, because Windows falls apart when you have more than 64 processor cores, and even Larabel pointed this out in benchmarking Windows 10. It's germane because people are doing it!

19:49 DaemonFC; Some Intel CPUs that are pretty affordable have 64 cores and hyperthreading now.

19:50 DaemonFC; And Windows just can't handle them efficiently. The Linux kernel can easily handle 512 before overheads starts becoming a problem and 1,024 before it starts to becomes a serious one, but even then it doesn't really matter much, because there are people running these supercomputers that just use kexec and have another kernel to manage the next cluster.

19:51 DaemonFC; You'd think that in all this time someone would have worked the kinks out of the Windows process scheduler and locking contention, but we're talking about Microsoft, which locks the taskbar to the bottom of the screen now, because of an embarrassing bug where the Windows installer couldn't upgrade Windows 10 if you moved the taskbar.

19:52 DaemonFC; The lesson they learned from that is instead of going around profiling code looking for where the actual problem is, just remove the feature that can make it a problem and call it a day.

19:52 *CrystalMath (~coderain@sx3xywjv5g4x8.irc) has joined #techrights

19:52 DaemonFC; And I laughed because Microsoft said if you remove the taskbar, things get "complicated" because "apps have to figure out what's going on".

19:53 DaemonFC; And I was like "Okay...So KDE lets you do that, Xfce lets you do that, most window managers let you do that. Windows let you do it until now.....".

19:53 DaemonFC; It's like look, if you just don't want to put in the work, say that.

19:56 DaemonFC; Car stereos are usually depressingly bad though, so maybe it's just an improvement over the average car stereo.

19:57 DaemonFC; When I blew a speaker on my dad's old 1992 Lumina that he gave me, I fixed it by buying a $10 speaker from AutoZone. Then the guy wanted to sell me a $20 adapter to hook it up to the factory wiring, so I just cut the wiring up and twisted the bare copper together and wrapped it back up in electrical tape, and the speaker worked.

19:58 DaemonFC; Screwed it back into the housing, put the cover on. Worked fine.
