00:00 DaemonFC; Matthew Dubiel's entire campaign Web site blames China for almost everything bad that's happened to us and accuses Congress and Biden of being a thrall to China.
00:01 DaemonFC; He says he wants to rescind our trade agreements, ban Confucius Institutes in public universities, and solve the student loan problem by getting rid of government subsidized loans and grants for useless college degrees and redirecting the money to trade schools.
00:01 chicksahoy; DaemonFC: it is china's fault that everything has systemd in it
00:02 DaemonFC; He also blames them for causing COVID and lying about how bad things were getting in their own country with it. (True)
00:02 DaemonFC; He also blames Biden for buying $2 billion worth of Chinese face masks when we could have made them here. (Also true.)
00:03 DaemonFC; China has harmed us greatly. They're a parasite.
00:03 DaemonFC; They've committed crimes that we just haven't pursued them for regarding trade policies.
00:03 DaemonFC; Such as illegal dumping of cheap TV sets and other products into our markets, including steel and car tires, and lots of other things.

00:05 DaemonFC; Instead of paying someone to get a worthless college degree with $60,000 in debt so they have to get a job at Walmart anyway, why don't we teach them some skills?

00:07 DaemonFC; chicksahoy, I'd call myself a relatively moderate Republican. The (national) party has slipped too far to the right.
00:07 DaemonFC; In some of the states, reasonable people can still win. It's rare, but it's possible in some states.
00:08 DaemonFC; The Democrats are the party of free shit (vote buying), corruption, scandal, huge debts, and allowing China to walk all over us.
00:08 DaemonFC; So it's like, what do you even do?
00:08 MinceR; and the "republicans" are the party of idiocy and christian fundamentalism
00:08 DaemonFC; Either way, your country just gets destroyed in some other way.
00:09 DaemonFC; The best thing you can do is keep them too evenly matched to start passing things quickly.

00:09 DaemonFC; A lot of Nancy Pelosi's bills are still dying in the Senate.
00:10 DaemonFC; Like most of them should.
00:11 DaemonFC; MinceR, I liked how Dubiel responded to the question about whether Biden stole the election.
00:11 DaemonFC; He said there's no strong evidence for that, but it is hard to swallow that such an awful and weak politician got the most votes of any presidential candidate in history.
00:12 DaemonFC; I think Biden will be a one term president.
00:12 DaemonFC; It's Jimmy Carter all over again.
00:12 DaemonFC; People had too much of Nixon. They saw Ford as a corrupt extension of Nixon. They voted for Carter to get rid of the "Watergate" era, Carter fucked things up, and was gone after 4 years.
00:13 chicksahoy; because Trump was the worst president in history
00:13 DaemonFC; Yes, exactly.
00:13 DaemonFC; Biden is Carter 2.0, but people "voted for him" to purge Trump out of the system.
00:13 DaemonFC; That's why I voted for Biden.
00:13 DaemonFC; I don't like him. I like him less every day, to be honest.
00:13 chicksahoy; yeah i would rather vote for Bernie Sanders
00:14 chicksahoy; but im canadian
00:14 DaemonFC; This next election is the Republican Party's to lose.
00:14 DaemonFC; And you lose that by trotting Donald Trump himself out again.
00:14 DaemonFC; And the question is are they smart enough to realize that?
00:14 *techrights-ipfs-bot has quit (Ping timeout: 2m30s)
00:15 DaemonFC; Many Republicans are not that smart, and the only way Biden wins again is if Trump runs.
00:15 DaemonFC; So they may just throw it to Biden again, and so that's a possibility.

06:11 activelow; mjg59_: i think BIOS is flawed conceptually, it duplicates kernel functionality, and i do not appreciate this design
06:12 activelow; digged into coreboot sources for a while myself, to improve support for some AMD phenom2 board/CPU ... never again, waste of time
06:13 activelow; as far as UEFI is concerned, it is conceptually flawed just as BIOS was
06:13 activelow; with some ARM SBC here uboot-loader is used, and there is some problems remaining with u-boot too
06:18 mjg59_; activelow: Right, so if they're both conceptually flawed, why do you reject one and accept the other?
06:19 mjg59_; The reason we generally don't just use U-Boot is that there's variation in platform design that the kernel is unaware of, and the firmware provides an abstraction
06:20 activelow; with u-boot loader UEFI simply wasn't required at all; and some technical details because i didn't want initrd and boot from read-only squashfs
06:21 activelow; linux kernel could identify MBR partitions _early_ during boot, and had some problem with GPT iirc which required an initrd iirc
06:22 activelow; i do not want any GRUB in between either, on x86/amd64 i kept isolinux/syslinux
06:27 mjg59_; Ok sure you can do that

06:27 mjg59_; How do you determine GPIO allocation?
06:30 mjg59_; Do you want to build a different kernel for every system you support?
06:32 activelow; gpio configuration is handled by uboot and device-trees; and yes, with ARM often separate firmware images must be assembled for different boards
06:33 mjg59_; The different firmware images is largely considered to be a bad thing
06:34 activelow; i invested some time and effort into scripting, to assemble firmware images for different ARM board variants, and amd64 besides

07:00 activelow; that's why i removed support for this from kernel, and some implementation exists for linux kernel independent from any BIOS support, for hibernation
07:01 activelow; which requires CONFIG_SWAP only and can persist an encrypted RAM dump
07:05 activelow; the problem with hibernation was, it's dangerous if swap-space is reactivated before a hibernate-restore
07:06 activelow; i did test this, and implemented an appropriate init procedure while ago, and it works as it should
07:08 activelow; however, since when i remove all sysvinit the boards boot very quickly, and i do not need any hibernation anymore, so i wiped all swap-support
07:09 activelow; CONFIG_SWAP with hibernation caused more headache (swap space not on flash memory) than hibernate-restore could benefit
07:10 activelow; so, i removed CONFIG_SWAP too

11:06 activelow; mjg59_: sorry for the confusion, i want to keep linux kernel as minimal as possible
11:06 activelow; meaning, i want to wipe wireguard, nfs and the entire crypto-api
11:07 activelow; and i do not want to use openssh, while sys-fs/fuse requires sftp for a network filesystem
11:09 mjg59_; activelow: Keeping Linux as minimal as possible means reducing the hardware you support and reducing use-cases people care about
11:10 activelow; exactly, i want to keep a network filesystem option available, with encryption of the transport layer, without ipsec or wireguard
11:10 activelow; ipsec is awful, and wireguard requires alot of ram, and i think the kernel crypto-api got some other issues
11:11 activelow; anyway, dropbear-ssh(server-side) can use the sftp-server from openssh i read a moment ago
11:12 activelow; and on client side i only need to tell sys-fs/fuse to use dbclient instead of openssh-client... should be easier than backporting the ancient shfs kernel module (kernel version 2.6)
11:18 mjg59_; sshfs is fine from a security perspective for a single-user system, but you do need to consider what it looks like otherwise
11:18 activelow; nfs got issues too with multi-user, if nfs is not kerberized
11:20 mjg59_; Yeah if you're running stuff from 20 years ago it's bad
11:21 activelow; i had preferred to backport shfs for the sake of simplicity... however internal kernel APIs changed considerably, it is too much effort than i could handle, to at least test this
11:21 mjg59_; Code is hard, yeah
11:22 activelow; you're mocking me? i do hack C regularly, hence i do know how much effort it is.

11:28 MS; i thin you can have any piece of hardware printed at some Chinese foundry cheap
11:28 MS; there a raspberry that costs 2$
11:29 MS; and is at least 2 orders of magnitude faster that my 1st computer
11:30 activelow; yes, that's one reason i try to minify and cleanup kernel and userspace
11:31 activelow; such as, an entire system can be maintained and developed 100% from source on a j-core turtle-board type system
11:31 activelow; which got 256MiB RAM for example, single core
11:31 MS; my 1st computer had 48k
11:32 activelow; interesting, surprisingly nowadays 1GiB of RAM are barely enough for most of "free software" and the GNOMEified GNU
11:32 MS; 256MiB is more then enough for tty apps
11:33 activelow; depends
11:33 activelow; for example, with dvtm terminal multiplexer, i can configure the exact size of scroll-buffers for each individual pty
11:33 activelow; and 256MiB fill up quickly
11:34 MS; you got storage it
11:34 activelow; for extended unicode support, on linux framebuffer console, i chose yaft, which allocates another pixel buffer
11:35 activelow; and a FullHD 32bit pixelbuffer alone eats another 64MiB of RAM, hence i would like to have back 8bit color palette framebuffer
11:35 activelow; which too, is much faster
11:37 MS; 16bit colour is good enough for terminals
11:37 activelow; 8bit is good enough almost everywhere everytime
11:37 MS; 8bit works too although a bit minimalistic
11:38 activelow; since i got back sixel support, i can assure you the picture quality of 256color palette is good, not perfect, it is good
11:39 MS; i bet you can have gifs playing alright
11:39 activelow; didn't try animated gifs yet
11:40 activelow; with suckless st terminal i already tested ffmpeg-sixel and mplayer1.4/libsdl1-sixel ... which showed promising results

14:36 matey; selectively, otherwise rsync is probably best
14:37 matey; first, copy the filesystem
14:37 matey; then, deal with duplicates on the target-- remove most
14:37 matey; then figure out how many of the non-duplicates i want
14:37 activelow; surprisingly, a stable filesystem such as XFS seems to be under heavy development still... which i didn't expect, changelog of it against my stable kernel and HEAD is huge
14:38 activelow; i don't feel confident, with enterprise-class filesystems such as XFS seeing regular git-commits
14:38 matey; ive got a bunch of tools that help with this task
14:39 matey; including one that sorts groups of lines by size
14:39 matey; so if you have 3 dupes listed, a lone line, and 10 dupes together
14:39 matey; it will put the group of 10 at the bottom, the lone line on top, and the group of 3 lines in the middle
14:40 matey; they dont have to be identical, only grouped (two groups will have an empty line between them)

14:43 activelow; ideally, i could use nilfs2 only; yet, there is some problems remaining with it: rename_whiteout for overlayfs missing, and the nilfs2-userspace utilities contain a bug when used with an aarch32 userspace on top of an aarch64 kernel... altogether, filesystems suck
14:43 activelow; then, a distributed network-filesystem... NFS/wireguard/ipsec will be gone for sure... too heavy
14:44 activelow; IBM/RedHat proposed Ceph a while ago, not sure if i should review this... given my memories what RedHat produced: glibc, systemd, etc... too much to name it at once
14:45 activelow; and if Ceph filesystem follows the same design principles typical for IBM/RedHat, then this doesn't meet acceptance criteria
14:46 activelow; Coda looks promising... for several reasons: the in-kernel dependencies are minimal, it doesn't require kerberos, supports encryption/authentication
14:47 activelow; the replication mechanism could serve as backup/recovery/redundancy, so i could wipe MD-RAID too from kernel (it's a complicated heavyweight too)

15:15 activelow; and ext4 had proven stable so far; except, i would prefer something STABLE without features added regularly, which break compatibility

18:06 DaemonFC; When I lived in Chicago, there was a woman who appeared in court with her son because he had been the victim of a crime. I had been mugged by a youth in Chicago and was there to testify (he was convicted). I started talking with the woman (who is black, if this makes a difference) about her son and the public school system, and she said he was attacked by another student at CPS and she was trying very hard to get her son out of CPS and into a

18:06 DaemonFC; The problem with public schools is that the state is obligated to attempt to educate everyone there, only not everyone there wants to be educated, and so not all of them will be. The ones who aren't educated and don't want to be are often the ones who bring everyone else down with them, so the only thing that a parent who wants their child to succeed can do is to be their child's advocate and get them out of the failed public education system
18:06 DaemonFC; full of gangs and corrupt unions."

18:07 DaemonFC; It's over with, the damage is done. What possible reason would I have to lie about my situation now? 19:18 TR Bot; in Audio Format Exposed Millions of Android Phones to Remote Hacking | PCMag
19:18 DaemonFC; The security hole was in Apple Lossless Audio Codec.
19:18 DaemonFC; I don't even know why you would support that. It's hardly even used, much less on Android phones.
19:19 DaemonFC; A rough estimate based on what I've seen people actually using shows it's roughly 90% FLAC, 5% each of Monkey's Audio and WavPack.
19:20 DaemonFC; WavPack has better compression and does more, and existed 2 years before FLAC, but for some reason Xiph.org made FLAC their official format.
19:21 DaemonFC; At the time (early 2000s) I think that WavPack and Musepack were probably better suited for Free media codecs than FLAC and Vorbis.
19:22 DaemonFC; Musepack is a subband codec that builds upon MPEG 1 Layer 2. One of the goals was an optimized lossy audio codec that avoided the MP3 patents and still had good quality at reasonable bitrates.
19:28 DaemonFC; MP2 was never sufficient, and most of the problem was lack of mandated VBR support on the decoder side and no Mid/Side Stereo support. MP3 had a poor implementation of M/S stereo. It had to either be enabled or not enabled on a frame-by-frame basis. Sometimes this forces the encoder to avoid using it at all when other codecs can apply it in part, since M/S stereo can cause MDCT artifacts if applied to an entire frame, which MP3 forces you to
19:28 DaemonFC; do. This is further compounded by the fact that MP3's bit reservoir causes the design flaw to affect other frames which normally wouldn't have been affected. So telling the encoder to use Variable Bitrate minimizes the use of the bit reservoir and minimizes the odds of this occuring due to part of another frame being packed into the reservoir, but cannot eliminate the situation as MP3 frame sizes are not arbitrary.
19:28 DaemonFC; So the algorithm to decide on which stereo mode to use in MP3 is quite...interesting.
19:29 DaemonFC; FhG seems to give up and use Joint Stereo less aggressively, which minimizes the risk of artifacts, but hampers compression efficiency.

21:43 DaemonFC; <schestowitz_TR2> people with 10 years left to live
21:43 DaemonFC; <schestowitz_TR2> decide for people with 70 years left to live
21:43 DaemonFC; Some would argue that since younger people don't vote, they're giving away their political clout to old people, which almost always vote.
21:44 DaemonFC; It's not a great idea to boycott elections and say they're all a bunch of bastards anyway.
21:45 DaemonFC; That's how you get assholes like Sam Cunningham, the former mayor of Waukegan, who threatened to have a woman arrested and to cause her to lose her affordable housing voucher because she posted an unflattering picture of him on Facebook.
21:46 DaemonFC; Or the time he sexually assaulted an immigrant rights activist after a city council meeting, with her husband standing right there, and then the Waukegan Police refused to investigate it. She asked why, and they said "Why do you think?".
21:46 DaemonFC; And then in the next election, less than 10% of city residents bothered to vote at all, even though the woman running against him couldn't have possibly been worse.
21:48 DaemonFC; What you are doing when you refuse to vote is you're handing over your decisions, which will be made, to a bunch of freeloading ignorant people, many of them fascists or Communists, who may well succeed in putting the worst possible option into office.
21:48 DaemonFC; Like Donald Trump.
21:50 DaemonFC; People like JB Pritzker and Sam Cunningham are the reason I changed my voter registration to "Republican".
21:50 DaemonFC; The Democratic Party of Illinois is a toilet from top to bottom.
21:51 DaemonFC; The ComEd Bribery Scandal involving Mike Madigan, their 40 year Speaker of the House, in total control of their party, is still unfolding.
21:52 DaemonFC; Madigan is also known as Public Official A, but the investigation is proceeding so slowly that he'll probably die before they actually convict anyone.
21:52 DaemonFC; If anyone goes to prison, it will be the people at ComEd who had to bribe him to do business in the state at all.
21:53 DaemonFC; Madigan did all kinds of nasty things. One reason there's so many lawyers in Illinois is because the Democrats passed outrageous property taxes, because Mike Madigan owned a property tax "consulting" firm.
21:54 DaemonFC; And people who hired his firm almost always ended up paying about 1/3rd of the original tax bill.
21:54 DaemonFC; Imagine that.
21:54 DaemonFC; The reason that Madigan and his pet Democrats stayed in office so long? Some breeders in Chicago wanted more welfare and kept electing them.
21:55 DaemonFC; And then all of this nasty stuff was someone else's problem, because the voters were getting "free shit" from the government, while people who earned money and paid taxes got nothing except the taxes.
21:55 DaemonFC; And so they all start moving out, and then there's more Democrats.

21:58 DaemonFC; Eventually, they realize they could get a lot more votes if they start letting felons out of prison and then letting them chase the decent people who still haven't left out of the state.

22:31 TR Bot; Buffalo shooting is a reminder that millions live in food deserts : NPR
22:32 DaemonFC; Most "food deserts" happen because of unacceptable levels of crime in the neighborhood.
22:32 DaemonFC; Like the Jewel-Osco that got a grant from Chicago's government to open up on 71st and Jeffery and closed months later because of all of the shootings and robberies.
22:33 DaemonFC; Businesses don't want to deal with that, so by allowing the crime to go on unabated, food deserts are inevitable.

22:34 DaemonFC; I used to go to a cheap restaurant owned by some Arab men in that neighborhood. They were behind bulletproof glass!
22:35 DaemonFC; They eventually asked if I lived in that neighborhood and couldn't believe it when I told them I did.
22:35 DaemonFC; There were no other white people for miles.
22:36 DaemonFC; There was one nice area, called Jackson Park Highlands, and that's where we lived, but despite some effort by the city to keep the crime out, like blocking off access to the roads from 71st street, a lot of crime (rapes, muggings, etc.) spilled into the neighborhood because it was right next to a total war zone.
22:37 DaemonFC; We were lucky. I had the Crown Victoria, and we could just drive to Indiana every once in a while to do very large grocery trips and then drive back across the state line.
22:38 DaemonFC; schestowitz-TR, I had the idea, to move to another building my landlord owns. He pays the electric and does not allow air conditioners. But I had this idea.
22:39 DaemonFC; Put one of those window fans in, so it looks like that's all it is, and then hook up the exhaust from a portable air conditioner into it and seal it up tightly, and shove it into the window, and then you have yourself a camouflaged air conditioner.
22:40 DaemonFC; I mean unless he grabs a ladder and climbs up to the third floor, he'd have no idea what it really is from looking at it.
