00:03 kingoffrance; you really want a definition? :) metaverse: confusion of tongues :) quote ye olde dictionary: virtual: see virtue; having the power of acting or of invisible efficacy, potential; energizing originally it was "essence" and "ideal forms" and whatnot -- what is true and real and not illusion. then it became "imaginary" -- 180ed, 1984ed. "What are Augmented Reality Environments? A technology that superimposes a computer-generated i
00:03 kingoffrance; mage on a user's view of the real world," "virtual" originally was the "real" "pure" "virtue" world, as opposed to physical/sensible "illusion"
00:03 schestowitz-TR; during the lockdowns I trains to sleep several times per day, every day
00:03 schestowitz-TR; it works better
00:03 schestowitz-TR; with a routine and "normals" it's harder
00:03 kingoffrance; its "the computer is god" i guess is what it is :D
00:03 schestowitz-TR; it's whatever you want it to be
00:03 schestowitz-TR; meta

00:04 kingoffrance; "virtue" i think somehow became "moral" but the older, more generic seems to just be "pure"

00:09 kingoffrance; maybe another way to say above, "virtual" "virtue" was supposedly beyond senses....virtual reality is about getting trapped *into* senses, its 180ed :D
00:09 schestowitz-TR; VR is old
00:09 schestowitz-TR; 90s was a peak for it
00:09 schestowitz-TR; and then everyone lost interest

11:08 DaemonFC; Morning
11:09 DaemonFC; schestowitz-TR, I was talking with mom about the COVID vaccines. One of Mandy's coworkers took the Moderna booster, missed her period, and then freaked out and bought pregnancy tests.
11:09 DaemonFC; Then she got her period a week and a half late.
11:09 schestowitz-TR; psydroid2: is this the link I showed you last night?
11:09 schestowitz-TR; but for "forums"?
11:09 DaemonFC; That and the 500% higher heart inflammation. I told mom that they dosed everyone with some beta tests.
11:09 psydroid2; schestowitz-TR, yes
11:10 psydroid2; I am reading through the comments now
11:10 DaemonFC; And only now are we starting to realize who guessed right and wrong.
11:10 schestowitz-TR; psydroid2: good
11:10 schestowitz-TR; I put that in techrights and tuaxmachines also, iirc
11:10 psydroid2; Bruce Hoult is a former SiFive employee who has also worked at Samsung among other companies
11:10 schestowitz-TR; it's contamination
11:10 DaemonFC; Luckily, I looked at the data that was out there and made an educated guess and got it right.
11:11 schestowitz-TR; well, we work from home so we stayed in a sotr of 'bunker'
11:11 DaemonFC; I'm not even sure why Moderna's product was approved given the higher risks.
11:11 schestowitz-TR; without an actual bunker
11:11 DaemonFC; Over the years to come, this will undoubtedly cause more health expenses.
11:11 schestowitz-TR; here is one thing I will tell you
11:11 schestowitz-TR; before we move back on topic
11:12 DaemonFC; Even if few people get heart inflammation, the fact that it's 5 times more for no apparent benefit is troubling.
11:12 schestowitz-TR; 2 weeks ago I went to book a routine blood test
11:12 schestowitz-TR; I got my blood checked every 6 months
11:12 schestowitz-TR; part of NHS
11:12 schestowitz-TR; they said,
11:12 schestowitz-TR; can you gom to another clinic?
11:12 schestowitz-TR; why?
11:12 schestowitz-TR; they said,
11:12 schestowitz-TR; because we are over-capacity
11:12 schestowitz-TR; (for blood test)
11:12 schestowitz-TR; I said,
11:12 schestowitz-TR; I can wait for a while, it's not urgent
11:12 schestowitz-TR; so she booked me for a month later
11:13 schestowitz-TR; I never had this happen before
11:13 DaemonFC; Yeah, labs here aren't like that. It costs money so people don't go in there except as needed.
11:13 schestowitz-TR; waiting for a month for a routine blood test
11:13 schestowitz-TR; so my guess was,
11:13 DaemonFC; You don't go in when you don't expect anything wrong. You'd do it like once a year unless something concerning happens.
11:13 schestowitz-TR; 50 million Brits getting these agents in thje bloodstream leas to... stuff
11:13 schestowitz-TR; *leads

11:14 schestowitz-TR; (other than rianne)
11:14 DaemonFC; That or good old Boris has cut their budget so badly that they want you to kindly fuck off so they can prioritize people who have medical problems.
11:14 schestowitz-TR; Mark got his knees all swollen
11:14 DaemonFC; Since they don't have the resources anymore.
11:14 schestowitz-TR; the knee specialist told him this happened to lots of people after the AZ vaccine
11:14 schestowitz-TR; his partner started getting brown marks
11:14 schestowitz-TR; she showed me some
11:15 schestowitz-TR; she's only 30
11:15 schestowitz-TR; Mark was violently ill
11:15 DaemonFC; Routine monitoring isn't something they're going to prioritize if the government cuts their budget, even 10-20%.
11:15 schestowitz-TR; and he's a world class athlete with trophies
11:15 schestowitz-TR; his partner kept colapsing whole running
11:15 schestowitz-TR; going unconscious
11:15 schestowitz-TR; it kept happening
11:16 schestowitz-TR; and the physicians could not figure out the cause or how to prevent these
11:16 DaemonFC; Oh yes, and one of Mandy's friends went to the Philippines and got that stupid AZ shot when he could have gotten the Pfizer one here.
11:16 DaemonFC; Now if he gets a booster it can't even match because AZ isn't approved here.
11:16 DaemonFC; It was never approved here, not even for emergency use.
11:16 DaemonFC; And in the mean time, he got COVID anyway, within a few months after the second dose.
11:16 schestowitz-TR; anyway, back to tech
11:17 schestowitz-TR; psydroid2: risc-v will be ruined by beurocracy
11:17 schestowitz-TR; like linux foundation
11:17 schestowitz-TR; there will be an influix from rivals
11:17 schestowitz-TR; just like happened in OSI, maybe even FSFE and FSF
11:17 schestowitz-TR; these are assimilation tacticsa
11:17 schestowitz-TR; and the weapon of choice is money
11:17 DaemonFC; Linux is COVID, and climate change, and blockchain.
11:17 DaemonFC; Linux is also a Code of Conduct.
11:17 schestowitz-TR; if a person is stubborn and principled
11:18 schestowitz-TR; theny engineer s a scandal
11:18 psydroid2; schestowitz-TR, this time around I expect it to just be forked outright, which is also legal
11:18 schestowitz-TR; like replacing Torvalds with a loser like Zemlin
11:18 DaemonFC; Linux is also a program for AIDS relief.
11:18 psydroid2; once the ISA has all the extensions you need, who needs approval from the RISC-V Foundation or the US?
11:19 DaemonFC; Linux Foundation wants to save the trees, save the bees, save those whales, save some snails.
11:20 psydroid2; we might see RUS-V, VEGA-V, XING-V spring up in some time
11:20 DaemonFC; Whatever Bill and LOLITA Gates Foundation is into, that's what Linux is into.
11:20 psydroid2; all looking just like RISC-V with some changes
11:20 DaemonFC; You can take $50 billion and double in in 20 years by giving it away.
11:21 DaemonFC; What was it? 6% of their budget for Linux the kernel, at the Linux Foundation?
11:21 DaemonFC; And there's no telling what that even means because they didn't say how that was being spent.
11:22 DaemonFC; schestowitz-TR, "Corrupt Charity".
11:22 DaemonFC; They should lose their tax exempt status for spending more money getting more money (fundraising) than they do on Linux.
11:23 DaemonFC; It's well known that they cook the books on fundraising too.
11:23 DaemonFC; The Shedd Aquarium sells memberships and then they have special dinners for their members "on the house" every month. The whole thing is catered in.
11:23 DaemonFC; It's really quite nice.
11:27 DaemonFC; The efficiency gap of fundraising is terrible because it's a way for rich people to amuse themselves and write it off their taxes.
11:28 psydroid2; schestowitz-TR, the thing is that as the US you have designed a great new ISA in Berkeley for chips ranging from applications for everything from microcontrollers to supercomputers, but since you have existing companies to protect based on "so-called exceptional" x86, other countries are running away with the technology
11:29 psydroid2; so who is really at fault here? the dinosaurs or the next generation of reptiles?

12:23 DaemonFC; LOL
12:23 DaemonFC; Yeah, but it'll be Biden Dollars.
12:24 DaemonFC; The price of bacon is a dollar more per pound every week when you go to the store.
12:24 DaemonFC; Gas is almost $4 a gallon in the midwest, OUTSIDE of Chicago, and almost $5 a gallon in Chicago.
12:25 DaemonFC; Gallons of milk just went up 86 cents all at once last week at Walmart.
12:26 DaemonFC; If you devalue the currency, you can make "a lot of money". In 1978, when you pulled out a $1 bill, it bought what $5 does now.
12:34 DaemonFC; So in 2030, Apple will make less than it does now if it pulls in a trillion dollars that year. If they're even still relevant in 2030.
12:34 DaemonFC; 8 years is a long time in politics or tech.
12:34 DaemonFC; There's no telling what people will use by then. Hopefully, some of them will wake up and there will be better devices than an iPhone.
12:41 psydroid2; phones are just a gimmick

13:04 bnchs; is tiktok a psychological weapon against the west
13:04 bnchs; or against the world
13:04 kingoffrance; "the west" is a psychological weapon
13:04 DaemonFC; They only have three seats in the House, so to go for hers required watering down their own margins in the other two districts with more Republican voters.
13:04 bnchs; i witnessed alot of degenerate content on it
13:04 DaemonFC; So they could conceivably lose a district as well as seeing her re-elected.
13:05 bnchs; Douyin (chinese version) has less degeneracy than tiktok
13:05 kingoffrance; people say "the west" to invent some imaginary bible, its a meaningless term that just means "astrology"
13:06 kingoffrance; so draco the dragon is "western civilization"
13:08 kingoffrance; its just religions trying to steal land, start wars, same thing they always do

13:22 bnchs; so in vista 11

13:22 bnchs; taskbar can only be aligned to the bottom now
13:22 DaemonFC; Yeah, well, about that....
13:23 DaemonFC; Some "upgrades" to Windows 10 failed because people had their taskbar on the side or top of the screen.
13:23 psydroid2; as a developer why would you want vista (for other reasons than control)?
13:23 DaemonFC; And the Windows 10 installer couldn't handle that and bailed.

13:23 psydroid2; there is nothing of value left in that sorry excuse for an operating system
13:23 bnchs; holy shit i wonder why they did that
13:23 DaemonFC; So it appears that to "fix" that, you just lock the taskbar to the bottom of the screen.
13:24 bnchs; that's like a downgarde
13:24 DaemonFC; Then fixing the actual problem no longer matters because the user can't move the taskbar to another location.
13:24 bnchs; i actually have my XFCE taskbar to the top
13:24 bnchs; and i'm used to it
13:24 DaemonFC; Yeah, you can do whatever you want pretty much.

13:25 DaemonFC; GNOME Shell isn't as customizable, but it's a lot more usable than Windows Explorer.
13:25 psydroid2; this always gets me downvoted, but GNU/Linux + WINE is the better Vista now
13:26 DaemonFC; GNOME Shell is nice for laptop screens.
13:26 DaemonFC; It doesn't use a ton of screen real estate just sitting there.
13:26 psydroid2; I have my Mate bars to the right and the one for open applications at the top but autohiding
13:26 bnchs; i realized i was using top taskbar for the rest of my life
13:26 psydroid2; I just want to have as much vertical space as possible
13:26 bnchs; i remember when i was 8 and had my taskbar to the top
13:27 bnchs; back when i was using windows xp
13:27 DaemonFC; One of the first things you notice moving from Windows 10 to GNOME is that you have about another inch of horizontal screen space.
13:27 DaemonFC; For some reason, Microsoft and Apple waste a ton of space with humongous icons, and Microsoft has been doing that for a long time.
13:28 DaemonFC; Windows 95's shell didn't do that, but Windows 98's did.
13:28 DaemonFC; When I put the Windows 95 shell back in after removing Internet Explorer from 98, I always liked how much extra screen space I had.
13:28 DaemonFC; When you have to use a 1024x768 resolution, those gigantic buttons aren't nice.
13:29 psydroid2; the last Windows I seriously used for everything was 2000
13:29 DaemonFC; Opera defaulted to big buttons too, but you could change that.
13:29 psydroid2; but one disaster led me to move everything over to GNU/Linux
13:29 DaemonFC; Screen space was too valuable for big buttons, but everyone did them anyway.
13:30 psydroid2; Windows fans don't believe you when you tell them Windows eats your NTFS

13:30 DaemonFC; Malware goes burrowing into that even.
13:30 psydroid2; but I didn't know enough about GNU/Linux to install it yet

13:49 psydroid2; or better needs to be replaced by gemini and friends
13:49 psydroid2; don't assume what is on the client's end, just offer the information
13:50 psydroid2; it seems so simple but is difficult in practice because of control
13:51 kingoffrance; for a horrible analogy, autoconf purposely didnt trust any oses or compilers claiming things, they deliberately wanted to test each feature, because people lie, it was the only reliable way. not saying that is a good idea, just they too decided user agents are useless at that level
13:52 bnchs; people abuse user agents to serve lightweight pages to old browser and bloated ass pages to new browsers
13:53 kingoffrance; user agent is thereotically an alias for "supports features x, y, and z". it is really the features that are the issue
13:54 bnchs; features can be disabled in the advanced settings (about:config)
13:54 kingoffrance; *theoretically
13:54 bnchs; so the user agent would be inaccurate to how much features the browser supports

13:54 kingoffrance; true too yes
13:54 kingoffrance; same with compiler flags -std=c89
13:54 kingoffrance; exactly!
13:58 kingoffrance; user agents are perhaps a form of ifdef hell

21:09 DaemonFC; I was reading how they pull people up for an audit. Apparently, no humans are ever involved. Computer matching software sees if your income and deductions and credits sound right and it assigns each return a "risk score" from 000 to 999.
21:10 DaemonFC; The closer to 999 it gets, the more risky the return, and the more likely the computer is to assign it for an audit. People who have been audited before are automatically "riskier" so they start with a "penalty" assigned to their SSN or ITIN in future years and are more likely to be audited again because of this.
21:11 DaemonFC; What makes a return "riskier" is if it claims widely abused credits, credits that are obviously not allowed given what's on the rest of the return, "nice round numbers", and income that significantly deviates from what the IRS already had on file.
21:11 DaemonFC; There's no actual need to file a return, Congress just prevents the IRS from sending you one that's already completed, for free, for your review, to prop up a tax return software industry.
21:11 DaemonFC; Where you have to calculate what the IRS already knows, and pay a tax firm to submit it.
21:11 DaemonFC; And possibly get something wrong.
21:12 DaemonFC; Republicans were the strongest opposition. They claimed that they were concerned that the IRS wouldn't have your best interests in mind when preparing a tax return and might not give you all of the credits you deserve.
21:12 DaemonFC; But that's ridiculous. You could always amend it and send it back and tell them why, and it would be no more of a hassle than filing a return is today.
