19:04 DaemonFC; But if you get QBittorrent or Transmission, for example, out of Debian's archive or Flatpak, it should be safe.
19:05 SomeH4x0r; qBittorrent sometimes starts using a lot of my CPU for unknown reason. I think I need to switch to something else, maybe something CLI.
19:05 DaemonFC; The less you have to "take their word" for what's in it, the more you can generally trust the program. And, also, Web browsers have been cutting off download methods that are unencrypted.
19:06 DaemonFC; So, one threat over like, FTP, is that the data gets replaced by a "man in the middle" attack.

19:06 DaemonFC; You think you downloaded something from an FTP server, but an attacker somewhere along the way slips you something else.
19:07 DaemonFC; There's a million ways to trick the user.
19:07 DaemonFC; And that's almost always easier than attacking some software directly.
19:07 SomeH4x0r; I think it is easier to encounter a MITM which works even with encryption (e.g. Cloudflare) than to get a specific file replaced by some attacker.
19:08 DaemonFC; Best practices all around include remaining vigilant about where you dig up your software, using open source software that is out there for all to see, and using efficient software that is written to be small and possible to audit for security, and installing patches quickly.
19:08 SomeH4x0r; I only had a little experience with Android, eventually I quit after I realized something is out of order there. Like a device not receiving updates, while there is no reason for it not to be updated.
19:08 DaemonFC; Debian ticks off most of the "software" part, except that Mozilla is becoming a hostile upstream and difficult to keep up to date.
19:08 DaemonFC; So I use GNOME Web and Brave.
