17:37 schestowitz-TR; the twitter "app" became monopoly in 2018
17:37 schestowitz-TR; they killed off APIs
17:37 schestowitz-TR; the Twitter app is nonfree
17:37 matey; shows you how hypocritcal the fsf is then
17:37 matey; going after non-free js was a good idea, but they took too long and the web is more dependent on it than ever
17:38 matey; at this point its worth telling people to use the web LESS
17:38 matey; because the web will never be free
17:38 matey; like stallman
17:38 matey; the web is a hostage of bullshit, like he is
17:39 matey; when i rank (literally rank) free software into categories
17:39 matey; call it the "freedom ladder" :P
17:39 matey; thats a joke
17:39 schestowitz-TR; I agree on the www
17:39 schestowitz-TR; let me check geminispace again
17:39 matey; i put the web nearly at the bottom
17:40 matey; i seem to be at the same place with gemini that i was with bsd a few years ago
17:40 TR News; "My first online usage was on BBS's in Cleveland, Ohio in the 80's on my Commodore 64 with a second-hand 300 baud modem. This was later upgraded to 1200 baud. During these times, there was a local BBS called the Cleveland Freenet[2], which ran some custom flavour of BSD" gopher://sdf.org:70/1/users/xiled/phlog/2022/20220124_intarnets
17:41 matey; i know the web has no future but im still getting ready and transitioning gemini-wise
17:41 TR News; "Over the last weekend, I finally took some time to explore the tiny communities on Gopher and Gemini, and it just felt great. Nostalgic, sure -- I immediately felt like I was back on dial-up BBSes -- but also beneficial." gopher://stevenf.com:70/0/journal/2022/02/28/on-gopher.txt
17:41 matey; i dont feel as passionately about it (the web) as i do about gnu/linux, but i still feel passionate about it
17:42 matey; and gemini is a good alternative (most of the time)
17:42 matey; i think there will be other protocols
17:42 matey; more applications too need the "gemini touch"
17:42 TR News; "One of the rubbish parts of being a Scout leader is meetings. Unfortunately any organisation of people means meetings are inevitable. UK Scout groups are arranged into districts with around 10 to 20 groups all within a specific geographical boundary." gopher://sdf.org:70/0/users/stug/phlog/20220126.txt
17:42 matey; simplification, of the actual variety (not making the engine 100x as bloated and getting rid of the desktop like gnome did)
17:43 matey; gnomes concept of simplification is doublespeak. gemini is a real example
17:43 TR News; "People started using the inbox as a todo list, and Inbox Zero was a reaction to that. Instead, in Inbox Zero, you move the email from the inbox as soon as you see them, by sorting them into one of a bunch of categories." gemini://idiomdrottning.org/re-inbox-zero
17:43 matey; all this bloat needs to be gutted
17:44 matey; libreoffice has no future. im sad about that, but they made their bed
17:44 matey; collaborating with collabora (and gnome)
17:44 matey; libreoffice isnt libre, its more "open" than openoffice (in the worst sense)
17:44 schestowitz-TR; libreoffice is for SOME things
17:44 matey; but openoffice is already dead
17:44 schestowitz-TR; office suites are overused
17:44 matey; they are
17:44 schestowitz-TR; for letters you can do OK with text or tex editor
17:45 matey; and you know, they were easy to use, and i was ok with that
17:45 schestowitz-TR; or some tex stuff then "Smarly" turned into letter
17:45 matey; i was ok with the concept of openoffice
17:45 schestowitz-TR; openbsd is ok for a lot of stuff
17:45 schestowitz-TR; we use openbsd for internal site chat
17:45 matey; you talking about openbsd is like lieplanet talking about freedom
17:45 schestowitz-TR; and openbsd has gemini client sin the repos
17:45 matey; you dont know anything about it and you bullshit a lot
17:45 schestowitz-TR; ubuntu has none
17:45 schestowitz-TR; debian has none
17:45 matey; more than a client
17:45 schestowitz-TR; 50k packages, none for gemini!
17:45 matey; openbsd has its own gemini server (vger)
17:46 matey; it has a few clients
17:46 schestowitz-TR; kde neon comes without libreofficfe
17:46 matey; i have a client written in bash and/or awk or something
17:46 schestowitz-TR; I remember when ALL distros came with it
17:46 matey; it works, but i only want the gemini version of wget
17:46 schestowitz-TR; even puppy had some office suite
17:46 matey; (of which several exist)
17:46 schestowitz-TR; now puppy (easyos rather) focuses on browsers
17:46 schestowitz-TR; chromium, firefox...
17:46 matey; i dont think puppy had a real office suite
17:47 schestowitz-TR; when I bought a machine with puppy on it there was openoffice iirc
17:47 matey; puppy is a cute project, was, they probably slapped some tools together. and thats fine, really
17:47 schestowitz-TR; puppy is for some things
17:47 matey; oh yeah, ive run openoffice on puppy
17:47 matey; if thats what you mean
17:47 schestowitz-TR; like terminals that do one job cleanly
17:47 matey; i really cut my teeth on puppy, early in the century
17:48 matey; i was looking for monkey linux, because i was using pygmy and wanted to run on dos
17:48 matey; so i found a version of puppy based on... grub4dos
17:48 matey; it used a file as a virtual partition on a vfat system
17:48 matey; today thats bullshit, at the time, it was wonderful
17:49 matey; i had this weird cdrom issue where it worked fine but any distro loaded at like...
17:49 matey; puppy wouldnt load from it
17:49 matey; dsl took 15 minutes
17:49 matey; that was a pentium ii though
17:49 matey; but it wasnt the computer, it was the cd
17:49 matey; the computer loaded puppy SCREAMING fast from the hard drive
17:49 matey; hence, not the computer-- the drive
17:50 matey; the little tricks like mounting isos as loop
17:51 matey; booting with toram
17:51 matey; all those little things i learned on puppy
17:51 matey; unfortunately the barry worship convinced a lot of people he invented all those :P
17:51 matey; which wasnt true at all. what was true is he promoted those things a lot
17:51 matey; i dont blame barry for this, but maybe he "allowed" it like linus does (i dont think hes an egotist like linus)
17:53 barto; why's linux an egotist?
17:53 barto; linus*
17:53 barto; oops
17:54 matey; two things happened
17:54 matey; one is linux overshadowed what it was built on
17:54 matey; and pretended to be an os
17:55 matey; that was very bad for free software, great for its fake friend open source
17:55 matey; linus is a backstabber
17:55 matey; but on top of and related to this
17:55 matey; people act like hes some kind of renegade
17:55 matey; so not only did linux overshadow and take over gnu
17:55 matey; which still happens today-- today they dont even pretend there are other kernels for gnu, they pretend linux is the only one
17:56 matey; "there is no other operating system than gnu, and linux is ONE OF its kernels"-- saint ignucious
17:56 matey; but torvalds overshadowed stallman
17:56 matey; he just went along with all this
17:56 matey; today, people act like "hero worship" of stallman is toxic
17:57 matey; this is a pure historical rewrite
17:57 matey; TORVALDS was the one who was hero worshipped
17:57 schestowitz-TR; [17:56] <matey> but torvalds overshadowed stallman
17:57 schestowitz-TR; LF overshadows Linus
17:57 matey; the media AND the fanboys acted like he was a god
17:57 matey; <schestowitz-TR> LF overshadows Linus <- yes, open source eats their own
17:57 schestowitz-TR; Linus is just someone who pops up every sunday night to write a release or RC note
17:57 schestowitz-TR; he also chats to some devs
17:57 matey; someone will do the same to his boss jim zeppelin
17:57 schestowitz-TR; but he never does media interviews anymore
17:57 schestowitz-TR; he's little but a mascot to LF
17:58 matey; <schestowitz-TR> Linus is just someone who pops up every sunday night <- the bigger they are the harder they fall
17:58 schestowitz-TR; like Cerf at Gulag Inc.
17:58 matey; i typed gall, should have kept it
17:58 matey; yes, all the "illuminaries" (the real ones and fake ones) are gone
17:58 matey; we will have new ones
17:58 matey; but the ones who are honest will pay REAL homage to the giants they stand on the shoulders of
17:58 matey; not because of hero worship. but because of humility.
17:58 matey; because of honesty
17:59 matey; stallman too stood on the shoulders of giants
17:59 matey; linus stood on their neck
17:59 matey; granted, his bosses showed him how to do it
17:59 matey; but they pretended he was king
17:59 TR News; The gov. seems to be blocking sales of oil. Shortages foreseen. What a wonderful world, eh?
17:59 matey; and he was ok with that
18:00 matey; barry retreated, he was tired of being king, it was too much work
18:00 matey; so barry isnt like that i dont think
18:00 matey; linus was deposed. but his reign was fake anyway. he was peddling gnu as something he invented (his bosses convinced him to do that but he went along with it)
18:01 matey; but the culture of puppy was very much like "barry invented all this"
18:01 matey; barry invented boot to ram!
18:01 matey; a lot of it was simply based on assumptions. i dont think there was a plot
18:01 matey; just a lot of sloppy, shallow research
18:01 matey; and omg thanks for saving my old compter yay
18:01 matey; it was innocent and naive
18:02 matey; still, it would have been better for barry to educate and say "look, im just using tools that are available to everyone"
18:03 matey; he hyped up his distro a little
18:03 matey; so not linus but he let a bit of that go on, for years
18:03 matey; more of a misfortune than a crime, but its all relative
18:04 matey; like linus lite-lite-lite
18:04 matey; ultralite
18:04 matey; and there was stallman bashing
18:05 matey; really what linus did, he was the fake stallman messiah
18:05 matey; and barry...
18:05 matey; barry was like "our own personal linus"
18:05 matey; if you dont know any better, this can happen
18:05 matey; so i blame him a little, but just a little, and he retreated from it
18:06 matey; which is more noble than bad
18:06 matey; what would happen is, people would found out puppy WAS unique, but not nearly as much as they thought
18:07 matey; then they would go find a lightweight distro and use it more like puppy-- like booting it with toram
18:07 matey; puppy was extremely useful as a "my first distro" that way
18:07 matey; but it came with a pocket mythology about it, which really was mythology
18:08 matey; people need heroes. thats ok. sometimes they make too much of it though.
18:08 matey; barry DID contribute, really. he just let people give him too much credit for it. and when he retreated from that, many years later
18:08 matey; it was a step forward.
18:08 matey; for him personally
18:09 matey; puppy is stagnating but they put on a much braver effort than devuan did
18:10 matey; i seriously dont know wtf devuan even is, and i used the pre-alpha. and it was better than the first release.
18:10 matey; i thought the accusations of devuan being a cult were unfair
18:10 matey; at best, its puppy all over again.
18:10 matey; but id say its worse
18:11 matey; still, if the goal is to get away from debians madness, devuan accomplishes that
18:11 matey; its like standing still on a moving sidewalk which is moving at 1/5 the usual speed
18:12 matey; with no idea where the fuck it goes
18:12 matey; i mean, youre probably better off walking on a regular sidewalk at this point
18:12 matey; but its a first step away from debian, so that will help a few people
18:12 matey; who dont like walking
18:13 matey; better to stand still while moving away from debian at 1/5 the normal speed than stand still and stay with debian
18:13 matey; in 2015 it was the best option we had
18:13 matey; its 2022, a lot of us have moved on
18:14 matey; and its not elitism-- its anti-elitism
18:14 matey; systemd is incredibly elitist. it lies. it condescends. it controls. it gloats.
18:15 matey; it takes over
18:15 matey; and its owned by nazis, but you know
18:15 barto; nazi is a strong word
18:15 matey; literal nazis
18:15 barto; how so?
18:15 barto; what did they do?
18:15 matey; collaborating with the holocaust
18:16 matey; they helped round up the jews (and others)
18:16 matey; LITERAL nazis
18:16 matey; not just nazi flag wavers
18:16 matey; collaborators
18:16 matey; the history of ibm is FUCKED UP
18:16 matey; you cant really help kill millions of people and then say "ok, but we have changed"
18:17 matey; no they havent, theyre fucking evil and now theyre destroying gnu/linux
18:17 matey; theyve also made literally racist software for cops to abuse
18:17 matey; i mean, it goes on and on. they will never change
18:17 matey; but of the most (recent) relevance is they are destroying gnu/linux and they control gcc.
18:18 matey; all of which is bad and extremely relevant to free software
18:18 matey; they have used funding to attack the founder of the movement
18:18 matey; directly
18:18 matey; so i mean, when you consider all that, whats possibly to like?
18:19 matey; and then the icing on the cake i guess is they nearly killed fedora too
18:19 matey; but since i never cared about fedora, its more of a footnote imo
18:19 matey; i actually bought red hat on a cd because it came with a paper manual
18:19 matey; the manual was at least 1cm thick, and completely useless
18:20 matey; it was of no help to me in my efforts to install it
18:20 matey; i bought mandrake for $5 outside burlington coat factory (they used red hat i think)
18:20 matey; with no manual, and it installed just fine
18:20 matey; but since i didnt understand user accounts and permissions it was useless to me too :)
18:21 matey; i dont even know if i installed it properly, but i got the gui running
18:21 matey; if all i wanted was a vt, i had tomsrtbt and fiddled with that a bit
18:21 matey; i had pygmy linux but i wanted a gui
18:21 matey; this is in fact how i found puppy in the first place

19:19 DaemonFC; Grrr. Walmart billed the wrong credit card for my groceries because I added that one to pay at the pump with the Walmart+. So I had to cancel the order, get refunded, and place it for tomorrow instead on the appropriate card.
19:19 DaemonFC; Juggling cards for points is kind of aggravating sometimes, but it's hundreds of dollars per year so I put up with it.
19:20 DaemonFC; Gas is up at $4.59 a gallon. If I fill up at Exxon or Mobil, I can scan a QR code and pay through the Walmart app with my Discover card which has gas at 5% right now, and it still counts as gas, not Walmart.
19:21 DaemonFC; But the payment to the station has to get routed exactly like that, and then I pay $4.27 a gallon instead of the $4.59.
19:23 DaemonFC; So 32 cents a gallon is sort of worth putting up with the hassle when you consider that I have a 17.2 gallon tank and I go through approximately 1 gallon every 22 miles or so of city driving. (Although I still manage to do about 27 mpg on the freeway, despite the fact that I set the cruise control at 80 miles per hour, even though that means less than optimal freeway mileage).
19:24 DaemonFC; The optimal mileage happens on most cars around 60 miles per hour. It used to be 55, but now it's closer to 60 because cars tend to be more aerodynamic and lighter than cars were during the last oil shocks, in the 1970s, when Congress passed the maximum speed law.
19:24 activelow; that's excessive fuel consumption: ~15liters/100km; a modern car requires 66% less in the city
19:24 DaemonFC; I actually tried this experiment out once in a 1995 Chevrolet Lumina with the 3.1 liter V6 and the 4t60-E transmission.
19:25 DaemonFC; It achieved its best fuel economy at 62 miles per hour on the freeway.
19:25 DaemonFC; Since I had to do a lot of freeway driving for work, I set the cruise control at exactly 62 miles per hour, because that's really easy on a long stretch of rural freeway.
19:26 DaemonFC; <activelow> that's excessive fuel consumption: ~15liters/100km; a modern car requires 66% less in the city
19:26 DaemonFC; NAAAH
19:26 DaemonFC; My Crown Victoria was a lot worse.
19:26 DaemonFC; In Chicago city traffic, it got about 12 miles to the gallon.
19:26 DaemonFC; Around Fort Wayne it got like 15 or 16 in the city.
19:26 DaemonFC; If you got it out on the highway it did a lot better, as all cars do, because you're not asking as much of the engine on the highway.
19:27 activelow; honestly, modern engines require ~5.5liters/100Km; tested myself with some VW type engines, one was a recent VW Passat with diesel engine, the other a VW golf with 1.2L gasoline
19:27 DaemonFC; But when you only paid $2,000 for the car and the car is like SUPER reliable and you only put $100 a year into repairs for the five years you owned it, shitty gas mileage isn't really the same kind of killer that driving an unreliable car, or one with payments, is.

19:29 activelow; granted, although i think a reliable car and fuel economy can be had together
19:29 DaemonFC; It really says a lot that the stupid Korean cars have an engine half that size and can't get good gas mileage.
19:30 DaemonFC; Components on the car just wear down with time and will take turns needing replaced.

19:31 activelow; too depends how a vehicle is operated, makes a _huge_ difference, meaning even small cars require alot of fuel if accelerated often in stop-and-go traffic jams in the city
19:31 MinceR; which is what one normally encounters in a city
19:31 activelow; that's why, i am slightly confused when "eco activists" argue cars had to be small, because the fuel economy doesn't depend on the size/weight of a vehicle that much as they imply it did

19:34 DaemonFC; Once it's down to healthy metal, you do anti-corrosion treatment, then a body filler, primer, and paint.
19:34 DaemonFC; If you do it properly, it won't start rusting again for many years.
19:35 DaemonFC; But you have to make sure you grind all of it off.
19:35 DaemonFC; So for probably at least the forseeable future, I should have a car that looks....pretty good.
19:36 DaemonFC; The rust was too far advanced on the Impala to financially justify repairing.
19:36 DaemonFC; Mom took it to some hillbilly to repair the back wheel wells in like 2007 I think. Even then, it looked pretty good until about 2018 when it started to bubble up again.
19:37 DaemonFC; But that was still 11 years of driving the car around before the rust started to make it look nasty (and even now it still runs okay, so it has a few years left as a beater that looks bad).
19:37 DaemonFC; If you just don't do anything about it, it'll rot the car out from under you right away and forget keeping it another 10-15 years.
19:38 DaemonFC; If you wanted to dump more money in it, they could fix it _again_, but I mean, who wants to dump money into rust repair on a car with 300,000 miles. Not me.
19:38 DaemonFC; And that wouldn't be the end of it either.
19:39 DaemonFC; Mom was very hard on the interior. It's stained, it's ripped, some idiot cracked the dashboard to where if you take it out again one or two more times you're just going to have to replace it.
19:40 DaemonFC; But then she got rid of the low mileage very reliable Crown Victoria I GAVE her because "It was a little bit faded by the sun.".
19:41 DaemonFC; And she doesn't want to hear about how she got taken to the cleaners on that stupid 2011 Impala that cost her over $20,000 and is getting ready for an engine breakdown.
19:41 DaemonFC; I said, "All you had to do to the Crown Victoria if you didn't want to look at it was pay MAACO $1,100 to find a new grill and spray it!.".
19:42 DaemonFC; I mean, my God, even a cheap MAACO paint job would have made that thing look pretty good for many years.
19:42 DaemonFC; It's always best to respray it the same color that it was before. That way if you get scratches or chips later and don't want to fix them, they'll just be down to the factory paint, which won't rust or be as eye catching.

23:16 DaemonFC; schestowitz-TR, The car should all work out.
23:16 DaemonFC; I just wanted them to grind some rust and touch it up before it spreads and turns systemic.
23:17 DaemonFC; You give it like 5 years and at that point it costs so much to deal with that the car isn't worth touching at that point.
23:17 DaemonFC; Fortunately, this car isn't exactly a unibody design like some of the cheaper models are.
23:18 DaemonFC; So panels unbolt and you just grab an aftermarket panel if the whole thing is junk and you can replace one diseased part of the car if it's beyond saving.
23:19 DaemonFC; I got under the car with a flashlight. There's not much rust on the frame. There's nothing truly awful going on under there that should be a problem anytime soon.
23:19 DaemonFC; Maybe in 5 years I'll need to replace the fuel filler neck, but that's not outrageous.
23:19 DaemonFC; There's no rust at all on the gas tank.
23:19 DaemonFC; I think it might be newer than the car.

23:25 DaemonFC; They argue that this is biometric data and now there's going to be another big settlement against some hiring companies that produce this nonsense.
23:26 DaemonFC; It's not really hard to argue that a person's personality profile is biometric data. It's unique to the individual and a combination of biological factors unique to that individual.
