08:27 schestowitz-TR; how can we respond to the "Microsoft says Linux not secure?" BS articles?

08:27 schestowitz-TR; for now I just ignore

08:27 schestowitz-TR; not even adding to Daily Links

08:27 schestowitz-TR; not even with comment

08:28 Techrights-sec; good question, especially since they have control over what's left of the

08:28 Techrights-sec; trade press;

08:31 Techrights-sec; ; it may be that the only way is to addres what they are trying to

08:31 Techrights-sec; distract from: that M$ has been, is, and always will be swiss cheese and that

08:31 Techrights-sec; the ransomware activities have very quickly gone from a small cottage industry

08:31 Techrights-sec; to a major global phenomenon affecting whole nationstates

08:31 Techrights-sec; pounding the drum on Windows TCO might be one strategy but the tick is to get it

08:31 Techrights-sec; noticed

08:32 schestowitz-TR; right. right.

08:32 schestowitz-TR; so please carry on picking windows tco stories

08:32 schestowitz-TR; I add those to tuxmachines too

08:32 schestowitz-TR; better than feeding micreosoft bottom feeders

08:32 schestowitz-TR; even with [Ed:]

08:32 schestowitz-TR; in this case, I do not bother

08:32 schestowitz-TR; because unlike with vmware people can see what's wrong

08:32 schestowitz-TR; like microsoft is not authority for "Linux"

08:32 schestowitz-TR; rather than concern troll at best

08:32 schestowitz-TR; I did not check comments but I can imagine what people say

08:38 Techrights-sec; no but they are really increasing their effort to reposition themselves as

08:38 Techrights-sec; knowledgeable about security. They do this in part by conflating exploits

08:38 Techrights-sec; with attacks and then asserting that becase they are "attacked" (read

08:38 Techrights-sec; exploited) the most they have th emost knowledge and experience. Ongets thOne gets that straight from the microsofters themse

08:38 Techrights-sec; lves for years.

08:38 Techrights-sec; What really hurts is that they were able to get in on the Biden campaign and

08:38 Techrights-sec; because he won, tradition says he owes them a big one. He does not remember

08:38 Techrights-sec; how the various M$-based web sites for the Obama administration fell on theitr

08:38 Techrights-sec; faces and had to be replaced with real technology.

08:39 schestowitz-TR; ok, so you and I are in agreement on this

08:39 schestowitz-TR; people can figure out what's really going on

08:39 schestowitz-TR; and we ened to show what they are distracting FROM

08:39 schestowitz-TR; like Costa Rica

08:39 schestowitz-TR; and not waste time pointing out the obvious

08:40 schestowitz-TR; (Microsoft does not speak for "Linux")

08:40 Techrights-sec; "What people say" is subjective, do you mean people or M$ astroturfers. Already

08:40 Techrights-sec; a few years ago most forums had a 47:1 astroturfer to people ratio in the

08:40 Techrights-sec; visible comments.

08:42 schestowitz-TR; I think social control media is used more than comments now

08:42 schestowitz-TR; and it expensive toi 'turf

08:42 schestowitz-TR; also, I've just checked phoronix comments

08:42 schestowitz-TR; I think his forums are def. on the demise

08:42 schestowitz-TR; he has pushed a number of microsoft pieces of crap lately

08:42 schestowitz-TR; which is a net negative

08:42 schestowitz-TR; given the target audience for that crap

08:42 schestowitz-TR; going to run ddos protection in tuxmachines

08:42 schestowitz-TR; yesterday I had to restart httpd on it

08:42 schestowitz-TR; rianne noticed the issue, half an hour late

08:44 Techrights-sec; Yes, social control media is used /instead of comments and with M$-oriented

08:44 Techrights-sec; companies in charge of hiring moderators it does not go well for anyone.

08:44 Techrights-sec; Look at Conde Nast's Redddit for one of the worse examples.

08:44 Techrights-sec; tm did not trigger here yesterday

08:44 Techrights-sec; ^tm monitor

08:44 Techrights-sec; ack

08:45 schestowitz-TR; load came down before I even needed to start ddos protection so to speak

08:45 schestowitz-TR; microsoft pays conde nast a lot of money

08:45 schestowitz-TR; and the income sources will run out with the cash cows

08:45 schestowitz-TR; conde nast should die with microsoft

08:45 Techrights-sec; yes and IDG too

08:46 schestowitz-TR; IDG is pretty much dead already

08:46 schestowitz-TR; many of their old domains do not exist anymore

08:47 schestowitz-TR; those that still exist are barely active

08:47 schestowitz-TR; they just pretend to still exist by writing something, sometimes paid placements, once a week or

08:47 schestowitz-TR; once a day

08:47 Techrights-sec; yes

08:47 schestowitz-TR; IDG has no commitment from its new owner

08:47 schestowitz-TR; you hardly head of IDC, either

08:47 schestowitz-TR; *hear

08:49 schestowitz-TR; sjvn used to write in idg. now it's maybe one article per 2 months, even less

08:49 schestowitz-TR; just to keep the sites looking "not dead"

08:49 schestowitz-TR; you would be shocked if the articles showed you view counts

08:49 schestowitz-TR; the few that have counters suggest hardly anyone accesses sites via gulag noise

08:49 schestowitz-TR; like a couple hundredds

08:49 schestowitz-TR; and idg rss feeds have not been fundtional for over adecade

08:49 schestowitz-TR; so they have no way to reach an audience

08:49 schestowitz-TR; they don't use social control media either

08:49 schestowitz-TR; except accounts of the authors

08:49 schestowitz-TR; sjvn is about to lose his pluspora account (admin literally died)

08:49 schestowitz-TR; which is where he moved after he had lost his gulagPlus account

08:51 schestowitz-TR; last night I got some more tips re Nat Friedman

08:51 schestowitz-TR; but at this point I see no purpose going aftyer him

08:51 schestowitz-TR; afaik, he's not in a position of power anymore

08:51 schestowitz-TR; so having a go at his dad or wife would seem petty

08:51 schestowitz-TR; and would be hard for me to justify

08:51 Techrights-sec; a choice opportunity to use them might occur later

08:51 schestowitz-TR; it's like "kicking a puppy"

08:55 schestowitz-TR; ACK.

08:55 schestowitz-TR; FWIW, yesterday I posted FOUR batches oif Daily Links

08:55 schestowitz-TR; the morning one with politics was getting too long

08:55 schestowitz-TR; So I'm trying to split or spread that a bit

08:55 schestowitz-TR; This weekend I have more spare time than usual, think I reach optimum on some levels

08:55 schestowitz-TR; Don't know where to hunt fo more gnu/linux rss feeds

08:55 schestowitz-TR; you alreedy cover many bsd-oriented ones

08:55 Techrights-sec; I think they can only be found accidentally; usually you can check any new

08:55 Techrights-sec; article for feed information, and quite often it is there

08:57 schestowitz-TR; this is what I do if or when I stumble upon new sources

08:57 schestowitz-TR; howtoforge is still blocking me if I don't run a clownflare program

08:57 schestowitz-TR; and several other sites went down the same route

08:57 schestowitz-TR; their loss

08:57 schestowitz-TR; they "protect" themselves... from traffic

9 AM, May 21

09:02 Techrights-sec; :(

09:09 Techrights-sec; QuiteRSS has 527 feeds most of which are active but many are low activity and

09:09 Techrights-sec; some are defunct

09:10 schestowitz-TR; last night I customised quiterss some more

09:10 schestowitz-TR; e.g. adding colour to alternate lines

09:11 schestowitz-TR; having browsed all the options

09:11 schestowitz-TR; maybe mi5 will issue a warning not to update this software anymore ;-)

09:11 schestowitz-TR; ime, many techs in russia oppose putin

09:11 schestowitz-TR; at least silently

09:11 schestowitz-TR; to avoid being harassed

09:13 schestowitz-TR; I think we should invest more in gemini

09:14 schestowitz-TR; it also helps us distinuish ourselves

09:14 schestowitz-TR; 9k hits so far today and it's only 9am

09:14 schestowitz-TR; radia/lupa seems less active these days

09:14 schestowitz-TR; so it won't detect tyhe small new capsules

09:14 schestowitz-TR; unique ips are on the rise

09:14 schestowitz-TR; and either way we have a gateway for it

09:14 schestowitz-TR; so anything we do in gemini will in fact be an extension of the existing http/s site

09:27 Techrights-sec; ack

09:27 Techrights-sec; on the other hand, lupa might be focusing more on the smaller capsules,

09:32 schestowitz-TR; gemini s very different in many ways

09:32 schestowitz-TR; I stioll try to wrap my head around it

09:32 schestowitz-TR; for instance, no point having rss reads

09:32 schestowitz-TR; you would typically create a page that funnels inwars aggregators

09:32 schestowitz-TR; skyjake does the same as me

09:32 schestowitz-TR; then you can use some existing or new tools to process that

09:32 schestowitz-TR; also, direct access to capsulkes is not always needed

09:32 schestowitz-TR; reminds me of "blogroolls"

09:32 schestowitz-TR; I'm sure you sa w blogrolls back in the old days

09:32 schestowitz-TR; not thesame as planets

09:37 Techrights-sec; yes, but the planets have tended to be of little to no use to me, ever

09:41 schestowitz-TR; they gave visibility to sites you did not know existed

09:41 schestowitz-TR; without them, they'd be islands

09:41 schestowitz-TR; barely erven indexes in so-called 'search' engines

09:41 schestowitz-TR; I think a lot of so-called "screen time" got funneled into utter crap

09:41 schestowitz-TR; moving into the crap business is not an option

09:41 schestowitz-TR; not even a remote possibility

09:45 schestowitz-TR; GUD existed the search space

09:45 schestowitz-TR; but a new one entered, so there are two search engines now

09:45 schestowitz-TR; but given the nature of gemini I think search might not be the most appealing element

09:45 schestowitz-TR; I am looking into a gempost from this morning

09:45 schestowitz-TR; about Antenna

09:45 schestowitz-TR; I think gemini can innovate a lot in the "discovery" space

09:50 schestowitz-TR; just noticed a bug maybe caused by a timeout

09:50 schestowitz-TR; go to gemini.tt

09:50 schestowitz-TR; scroll down to articles

09:50 schestowitz-TR; see the entry of irc logs

09:50 schestowitz-TR; no title shown

09:50 schestowitz-TR; never seen this before

09:50 schestowitz-TR; *gemini.TR

10 AM, May 21

10:00 Techrights-sec; that was a missing title in the actual article, it's fixed now

10:03 schestowitz-TR; I think I missed it when it was actually missing ^_^

10:03 schestowitz-TR; I'm going to study today my workflow and processes

10:03 schestowitz-TR; I stronmgly dislike the UNCERTAINTY about the job and what comes next

10:03 schestowitz-TR; my sister told me this morning she explored changing employers too

10:03 schestowitz-TR; she is a c++ dev, she can find something better

10:03 schestowitz-TR; but from home only part time

10:03 schestowitz-TR; and very demanding production-wise

10:03 schestowitz-TR; it's hard to organise the workflow here without knowing how much

10:04 schestowitz-TR; we work after july

10:04 schestowitz-TR; my guess is that we'll do part-timing, but the nature of the client

10:04 schestowitz-TR; and the work might continues to suck

10:04 schestowitz-TR; I spoke to sister half an hour, same withmy mom

10:04 schestowitz-TR; who says she is running out of savings

10:04 schestowitz-TR; which were invested in crap basically

10:04 schestowitz-TR; and lost a lot of the value already

10:06 Techrights-sec; ack

10:06 schestowitz-TR; On another note entirely, it makes no sense at all that my main laptop STILL has 9 dual head virtual

10:06 schestowitz-TR; desktops when I have 9 screens

10:06 schestowitz-TR; the toiehr laptops have 1 virtual desktop

10:06 schestowitz-TR; but a lot is to do with "legacy" or old habits

10:06 schestowitz-TR; or consolidation

10:06 schestowitz-TR; around one single file system

10:07 schestowitz-TR; I tried to spread out to other file systems, e.g. ssh (not sshfs)

10:07 schestowitz-TR; so the main challenge is breaking old habits and it's psychological mostly

10:09 schestowitz-TR; thought process:

10:09 schestowitz-TR; identity any use of virtual/overlapping space

10:09 schestowitz-TR; tabs, virtual desktops etc.

10:09 schestowitz-TR; those should be split apart

10:09 schestowitz-TR; a lot of "modern" things emit far too many "notifications"

10:09 schestowitz-TR; they wrongly assume you want more, not less, signal

10:14 Techrights-sec; ack

10:16 schestowitz-TR; idea: do you wish to assemble a quotes database with me in git?

10:16 schestowitz-TR; split by themes/topics?

10:16 schestowitz-TR; currently I use a flat, long text file

10:16 schestowitz-TR; that DB is useful when I want to look up certain things by topic

11:02 Techrights-sec; I see the monitoring program hit a bug lst night :(

11:03 schestowitz-TR; there was about 30-50m mins of download for tuxmachines

11:03 schestowitz-TR; sometimes I can see it on the screen here (a script that opens it in a browser, rekonq)

11:03 schestowitz-TR; but this time it was rianne trying to post and not being able to reach it

11:03 schestowitz-TR; so I got intercom call

11:53 schestowitz-TR; away from the BS

noon, May 21

12:01 schestowitz-TR; maybe I am being thick of an a-hole

12:01 schestowitz-TR; but if you greet your audience with shit like WSL

12:01 schestowitz-TR; sooner or later they will develop a resistance

12:01 schestowitz-TR; this is why this is verboten in tuxmachines

12:01 schestowitz-TR; bad news? OK.

12:01 schestowitz-TR; but not entryism

12:02 schestowitz-TR; or, bad news with suitable response to it

12:02 schestowitz-TR; not unchallenged

12:02 schestowitz-TR; what I dislike about phoronix is how it treats all this microsoft threats

12:02 schestowitz-TR; like they're ordinary, acceptable things

12:02 schestowitz-TR; inc. github

12:02 schestowitz-TR; like the little bouy who brings home a wolf on a "leash"

12:02 Techrights-sec; WSL and Azure coverage can, for the most part, be eschewed

12:03 schestowitz-TR; christine seems afraid of tuxmachines commenting negatively on icbm and openwashing etc.

12:03 schestowitz-TR; because she became part of that problem

12:03 schestowitz-TR; this leads to guilt

12:03 schestowitz-TR; or fear of being cast as "part of the problem"

12:16 Techrights-sec; guilt will eventually lead to other problems

12:17 schestowitz-TR; having to make money is not a moral argument

15:23 schestowitz-TR; the past week's wordpress gz were not good

15:23 Techrights-sec; ack

15:23 Techrights-sec; I haven't checked since there have been problems here with getting the backups

15:37 schestowitz-TR; the dumping process does not yield any warning

15:37 schestowitz-TR; and head/tail on the file makes it look in OK integrity

15:37 schestowitz-TR; I am testing some of this manually at the moment

15:37 schestowitz-TR; since all 3 DBs are affected by this

15:38 schestowitz-TR; at seemingly random patterns since 6th Jan (hardware did not change until over a month later)

16:23 schestowitz-TR; observation

16:23 schestowitz-TR; I've not yet seen any bad gz on the TM VM, which is on the same physical machine and disk

16:23 schestowitz-TR; having run the backup manually in daytime, all gz files are OK

16:23 schestowitz-TR; maybe I should test manual runs at different times, just to see if a pattern emerges

16:23 schestowitz-TR; since that "lost" (empty) file I've not had an FS-related incident

16:23 Techrights-sec; filesystems are scary

16:23 schestowitz-TR; as seen in yesterday's IRC logs, a large site we support

16:23 schestowitz-TR; (about human rights in Iran) seems to ave lost some stuff in migration

16:23 schestowitz-TR; from djangocms to drupal

16:23 schestowitz-TR; (not our fault0

16:23 schestowitz-TR; it's a bit scary taking a body of work that took a long of work (not mine; many

16:26 schestowitz-TR; observation

16:26 schestowitz-TR; I've not yet seen any bad gz on the TM VM, which is on the same physical machine and disk

16:26 schestowitz-TR; having run the backup manually in daytime, all gz files are OK

16:26 schestowitz-TR; maybe I should test manual runs at different times, just to see if a pattern emerges

16:26 schestowitz-TR; since that "lost" (empty) file I've not had an FS-related incident

16:26 schestowitz-TR; as seen in yesterday's IRC logs, a large site we support

16:26 schestowitz-TR; (about human rights in Iran) seems to ave lost some stuff in migration

16:26 schestowitz-TR; from djangocms to drupal

16:26 schestowitz-TR; yesterday we received 19-page confidential documentsa, circulated among everyone

16:30 schestowitz-TR; (so there are those other elements "at play"... spoke to my mom about things today,

18:02 schestowitz-TR; regarding what I said about El Reg

18:02 schestowitz-TR; today I went through over 100 items there

18:02 schestowitz-TR; maybe 150

18:02 schestowitz-TR; it's not as bad as last year

18:02 schestowitz-TR; but not as good as last week

18:02 schestowitz-TR; there are still the occasional BS articles

18:02 schestowitz-TR; in security leftovers I included what Microsoft may be trying to divertt attention away freom

18:02 schestowitz-TR; if you are curious you can go enter linux.slkadhdot.org or whatever

18:02 Techrights-sec; that's good to hear, except for the last week

18:03 schestowitz-TR; the register has had and still has many writers

18:03 schestowitz-TR; I try to differentiate by author and sometimes call them out on it

18:03 schestowitz-TR; Microsoft Tim went to some very very tiny site

18:03 schestowitz-TR; barely to be seen anymore

18:03 schestowitz-TR; like satalin Cimpanu and Bioogdan Popa

18:04 Techrights-sec; nah I stopped looking at Slashdot close to ten years ago

18:04 Techrights-sec; there's not point in either driving traffic to them or raising their visibility

18:04 Techrights-sec; Catalin Cimpanu is now shilling at Risky.biz

18:05 schestowitz-TR; I think hat too is downgrade/demotion

18:05 schestowitz-TR; if I know their visibility right

18:05 schestowitz-TR; or "auto revolution"

18:05 schestowitz-TR; those sites usually implode after a while

18:05 schestowitz-TR; catalin started in bleeping computer afaik

18:05 schestowitz-TR; abram lawrance, ms booster, runs that site

18:05 schestowitz-TR; *lawrence (sorry, many typos in names)

18:09 schestowitz-TR; looks at comments.... only 1 comment

18:09 schestowitz-TR; LOL!

18:09 schestowitz-TR; making fun of systemd... the comment talks of D-beer-D

18:09 schestowitz-TR; you can see it in phoronix if you fancy a whirl

18:09 schestowitz-TR; "beergroups"

18:09 schestowitz-TR; "imp,emntn d deer-D property"

18:09 schestowitz-TR; so maybe microbell can take the clue

18:09 schestowitz-TR; people don't want this thing

18:09 schestowitz-TR; it's forced upon them

18:09 schestowitz-TR; and they're like, "OK, I guess I need to learn this"

18:20 schestowitz-TR; Ok, thanks.

18:46 Techrights-sec; with some additional structured metadata, it would be even more useful for

18:46 Techrights-sec; using as a citation database

18:48 schestowitz-TR; over the years some sites tried to copy that format, but they could not keep up (pace)

18:48 schestowitz-TR; and lacked the tools, experience etc.

18:48 schestowitz-TR; I started in USENET around 2004 ot 2005

18:49 schestowitz-TR; befoire realising this I'd spend hours struggling

23:54 schestowitz-TR; Still, Gemini is nowhere as big as HTTP/S, no point (or any use) denying it. But it's growing fast. TuxMachines and Techrights average almost 10 hits per second, but a lot of today's Web is bots and other junk. Some of them are barely distinguishable and it makes running a Web site potentially expensive. Gemini has very low throughput and load overheads.
