02:35 schestowitz-TR; Hi,

02:35 schestowitz-TR; I have some spare time

02:35 schestowitz-TR; I thought the following might be worth implementing:

02:35 schestowitz-TR; trigger update of latest vids page when a new post gets published

02:35 schestowitz-TR; as part of the existing pipeline

02:35 schestowitz-TR; then, gemini is called to do the same, after http

02:35 schestowitz-TR; caveat: tr-remote-gemini-cron-updater is using key-based access to the SBC

02:35 schestowitz-TR; it does not do the same over http/s

02:35 schestowitz-TR; so I am typing away in ytalk

02:35 schestowitz-TR; thinking some php hackm for calling the back end

02:35 schestowitz-TR; the refresh-gllarry script tuns in userspace

02:35 schestowitz-TR; I will check if wordpress can be chained to a shell script

02:38 schestowitz__[TR]; techrights bin]$ time ./refresh-video-gallery.sh

02:38 schestowitz__[TR]; real 0m0.038s

02:38 schestowitz__[TR]; user 0m0.032s

02:38 schestowitz__[TR]; sys 0m0.016s

02:39 schestowitz__[TR]; so upon some further investigation, one viable option might be to run it every 5 minutes (any downsides? it's not so i/o-intensive), then put a time delay of at least 300 seconds in tr-remote-gemini-cron-updater, just to give it enough time to fetch the latest addition

04:19 schestowitz__[TR]; Upon the start of a new year:

04:19 schestowitz__[TR]; gemini@raspberrypi:~/gemini/tr_text_version $ /home/gemini/bin/gemini-cron-updater.sh

04:19 schestowitz__[TR]; Sun 2 Jan 03:54:50 GMT 2022

04:19 schestowitz__[TR]; mkdir: cannot create directory ./bulletins/2022/01/: No such file or directory

04:19 schestowitz__[TR]; So I've made a note to myself to create a new year's director for:

04:19 schestowitz__[TR]; bulletins

04:19 schestowitz__[TR]; boycottnovell

04:19 schestowitz__[TR]; irc

04:19 schestowitz__[TR]; social

04:19 schestowitz__[TR]; techbytes

04:19 schestowitz__[TR]; I've also made some changes, which the git logs now.

04:19 schestowitz__[TR]; The main changes are in a Perl file. I'm not good at Perl, so likely added poor practices to the file. Could use a fast audit. ;-)

04:50 Techrights-sec2; Tampere might be a wholly owned microsoft subsidiary wit hthe ability to

04:50 Techrights-sec2; mint PhDs in exchange for 3 years of work+marketing. m$ has its own union of

04:50 Techrights-sec2; sort to coordinate attacks, afaik.

5 AM, January 2

05:14 schestowitz-TR; Thanks for hacking on my perl 'hack'

05:14 schestowitz-TR; It's much better now clarity-wise

05:14 Techrights-sec2; np

05:20 Techrights-sec2; the gemini clients don't make a clear distinction between Gemini links

05:20 Techrights-sec2; and ones requiring a non-Gemini, external browser, Without additional

05:20 Techrights-sec2; markings, it is all too easy to accidentally click on one and be subjected

05:20 Techrights-sec2; to not just a pop-up window but a whole application.

05:20 schestowitz-TR; not just ANY application, like 200MB of it!

05:21 schestowitz-TR; last I chedked, in amfora config files you can only specify what to use for http/s but nothing for multimedia

05:21 Techrights-sec2; :/ for a lean browser, yeah

05:21 schestowitz-TR; netsurf is about 32mb blank, older firefox around 200mb

05:24 Techrights-sec2; There's slightly more flexibility in Amfora than that but not much more

05:24 Techrights-sec2; and I'm trying to leave it as close to default as I can. Though I have

05:24 Techrights-sec2; changed my client's colors for extrnal protocol links.

05:24 schestowitz-TR; so have I,. for monitoring I use it a lot

05:24 schestowitz-TR; bill's guardian now writes about "prince andrew" again... I suppose all that googlebombing will play with people's memory

05:31 Techrights-sec2; yes and to completely distract from bill; it looks like the press aims to

05:31 Techrights-sec2; focus on the prince as the sole bad guy; given how few testimonies and witnesses

05:31 Techrights-sec2; were at the trial, I suspect that selection of witnesses was *very* carefully

05:31 Techrights-sec2; curated to leave only the prince exposed; he'll take one for the team and

05:31 Techrights-sec2; being old and royal nothing will happen and then the press will move on

05:31 Techrights-sec2; leaving the actual criminals unaddressed, is one likely outcome of it all.

05:33 schestowitz-TR; all we can do it use these articles to ROPE in what they distract from, or bring up the related bits, ESP. when that's done by Bill-funded 'media' like The Beelb (BBC), guardian, and N- P.R.

05:34 Techrights-sec2; ack

05:34 schestowitz-TR; he thinks he can move on by drowning out tyhe signal with greenwashing puff pieces, but people push back

05:35 Techrights-sec2; I hope that pushback continues; however he continues to buy lots of reputation

05:35 Techrights-sec2; management and revisionism

13:25 schestowitz__[TR]; "

13:25 schestowitz__[TR]; Hard reckonings

13:25 schestowitz__[TR]; Whether it's my own newfound awareness, or whether changes are happening in the world, increasingly on my radar is e-waste (WEEE) 1, the chemistry of electronic products and the effects of waste on the environment. This year I read much more on chip fabrication, VLSI composition, recycling (or lack of) and got deeper into the problems of hardware monopoly, questionable provenance and insecure supply chains, not just of software but the

13:25 schestowitz__[TR]; gadgets it runs on. A more holistic understanding of tech rights as an ecological and global sociological issue has grown in my mind.

13:26 schestowitz__[TR]; Surprising myself, I've gone from a Bitcoin disciple to a crypto-dissident. Yes, we need a way to divorce human affairs from the wickedness of the banking elites, but this isn't it. Sometimes you just need the courage to say, oops I made a mistake, back to the drawing board.

13:26 schestowitz__[TR]; Pondering the trap that is "proof of waste" is depressing. It's one of those tragedies where we think we can solve it by "pushing through". If tomorrow we built enough fusion reactors to eliminate all fossil fuels and provide a surplus of electricity, Bitcoin would adjust its value and expand its activity to burn-off the entire surplus. We have created a monstrous non-intelligent paperclip maximiser. I wonder why we didn't see this coming;

13:26 schestowitz__[TR]; that combining unfettered greed with a boundless appetite for energy might create a Godel Sentence for humanity already on the precipice of climate catastrophe.

13:26 schestowitz__[TR]; Staying the course

13:26 schestowitz__[TR]; Another theme I have dealt with this year is "tenacity versus resignation". People have different coping strategies to technological terror, some get mad, some get even, some get the hell out of there. I began the year helping a student write an inspiring story of how he graduated without non-free software. Elsewhere I have encountered learned helplessness.

13:26 schestowitz__[TR]; With the supermarket boycott, a disappointing number of people said to me "But what's the point Andy? They're all just doing the same". Despite there being absolutely no evidence that other British supermarkets were violating privacy rights there's a pervading sense around tech that a possibility once is a necessity forever, which feeds into a nihilistic refusal to resist even the most tepid incursions by technological abusers.

13:26 schestowitz__[TR]; What I've learned is that small, polite but resolute gestures make big changes, and that standing intransigently up for principles as an army of one does make the difference. Despite every armchair theorist's wisdom on the intractability of 'network effects' we successfully flipped our whole family communication circle from Whatsapp to Signal in a few weeks.
