↺ US Public Sector regulatory compliance with Ubuntu Pro and AWS GovCloud

Co-authors: Massimiliano Gori , Product Manager, Canonical & Mark Thomas, Solutions Architect, AWS

Federal government organisations that either collect, store, share, transfer, or process sensitive data, as well as all federal agencies, their contractors, and service providers, are required to operate in high-security environments to ensure the safety of sensitive data such as Personally Identifiable Information or confidential information.

↺ Perfect order: Delivering the right products at the right time in the right quantity

Within inventory management, perfect order refers to the ability to deliver the correct product to the customer, in the right quantity, at the right time, in the right condition, with the right documentation and at the right cost. Essentially, it means meeting customer demand without errors or delays to the highest degree possible. Inventory management encompasses procedures and processes that directly or indirectly affect the bottom line ordering, receiving, storing, tracking and accounting for all of the goods a business sells. It is a key element of supply chain management and is critical to any business that sells physical goods or is responsible for maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) supplies.

To achieve perfect order, a company must have an efficient inventory management system that optimizes inventory levels, tracks inventory movement and ensures accurate order fulfillment. This involves balancing the cost of carrying inventory with the cost of stockouts and lost sales, as well as implementing processes and technologies that enable real-time inventory visibility and accurate demand forecasting.

↺ details/summary inconsistencies

Scott O’Hara wrote a fantastic blog post about the details and summary elements last year. He explains that there are a lot of oddities and inconsistencies, and he backs his statements with detailed testing.

To better understand the extent of these oddities and inconsistencies, I did my own testing (not as detailed as Scott’s), and here’s what I found: [...]

↺ The traditional workaround for stuck NFS(v3) locks

The most visible way for the server and clients to become de-synchronized is a stuck lock, where the server believes a client has a file locked but the client thinks it doesn’t. A file with a stuck lock can never be (re-)locked by any programs trying to do so, and it will normally stay that way until the reboot of either or both of the server or the client the server thinks has the file locked. As a result, working around these stuck locks has been a concern of NFS server system administrators for a long time and people have come up with a traditional brute force solution.

(In informal conversation sysadmins may talk about ‘clearing’ a stuck lock this way, but we’re not really doing that; we’re working around it with brute force.)

↺ Setting the ARC target size in ZFS on Linux (as of ZoL 2.1)

However, raising the ARC target size will only have a meaningful effect if ZFS can actually use more memory. If the free memory situation is bad enough that memory_available_bytes is negative, your newly set ARC target size will pretty much immediately start shrinking, possibly significantly, and the ARC will have no chance to actually use much more extra memory. If available memory is positive but not very large, it may turn negative once the ARC’s actual size grows a bit more and then ZFS will shrink your recently-raised ARC target size back down, along with probably shrinking the ARC’s actual memory use.

↺ 10 ways to celebrate Earth Day with open source

Even though we strive to live every day like Earth Day here on Opensource.com, today is an especially good day to discover new ways to help the planet. Open source brings forth many possibilities for people from all areas and levels of technical expertise.

There are open source tools anyone can use to explore nature’s magic, whether looking up at the night sky or down at the plants in your own backyard. Open source empowers web developers to build sustainability into their practice. Our readers love to rescue old computers with Linux, preventing them from piling up in landfills. Homeowners look to open source solutions for monitoring energy usage or installing EV stations. Opens source brings like-minded folks together to solve the world’s biggest problems, like hunger and climate change.

This Earth Day, take the time to reflect on how to incorporate open source into your sustainability habits.

↺ The future of the sharing business model

Younger generations prioritize experiences over assets and quality over quantity in many areas of life, and technology has evolved to help fulfill their desires. That’s the position of Arun Sundararajan in his book The Sharing Economy: The End of Employment and the Rise of Crowd-Based Capitalism. According to Sundararajan, these young people do not want to be burdened with owning unneeded things.

Notice these demand changes:

With new technologies becoming available, this new lifestyle is becoming more achievable. It is a future in which peer-to-peer exchange becomes increasingly prevalent, and the crowd replaces the corporation at the center of capitalism. The sharing economy, as Sundrararajan defines it, is similar to Jeremy Rifkin’s Collaborative Commons, as described in The Zero Marginal Cost Society: The Internet of Things, the Collaborative Commons, and the Eclipse of Capitalism. However you define it, these are growing communities aligned with the principles of open organizations.

↺ AgonLight Weekend Programming Challenge – ISSUE 1

Some of you probably remember the Weekend Programming Challenge we ran ten years ago! The code is still here. The idea behind it was for people to learn from each other’s solutions and have fun. To add a bit of competition, a small reward was awarded to the winner, usually a new Olimex board.

We decided to resume this coding challenge for AgonLight.

↺ What’s new in R 4.3.0?

In R, almost all of your data will be stored as a vector. Even if your vector holds a single value it is still considered to be a vector by R. This is unlike many other languages, and getting comfortable “thinking for the whole vector” can gain you efficiencies from several viewpoints. Your code will be more concise and it may even run quicker, when compared with an iterative approach to the same problem.

↺ Will emerging artificial intelligence boost research productivity?

As people like Stonebraker have remarked, we have lost our way: people publish to get jobs and promotions, and no longer to advance science. the focus on peer-reviewed publications has more to do with a status competition between researchers and academics, than a genuine desire to advance science. The metrics have been gamed. Researchers, generally, no longer have customers: nobody uses the result of the work, except maybe other researchers. Peer-reviewed papers are getting increasingly boring

Python

↺ How I teach Python with open source tools

I love to teach Python. I start by beginning where the learner begins. My first question is, “How would you like to learn Python?”

They usually answer, “What’s Python?”

That’s when I give them some examples of websites built with Python they might already be familiar with. I also provide examples of using Python in data science, engineering, web development, and, most recently, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Most folks are intimidated when you try to introduce computer programming because their first efforts failed or someone told them programming is difficult. I show them a simple print statement that easily demonstrates how much the Python syntax is like the language they speak.

Leftovers

↺ So I Went a Little Viral and Survived

For starters, if you haven’t read my post “Low Code Software Development Is A Lie”, you should give it a go. The internet seemed to enjoy reading it for the most part. I generally don’t do any self-promotion of posts short of directly sending links to a few friends over Discord that I think might be interested in the topic. So at least one of my few dedicated readers (who presumably use the RSS feed to keep tabs on my content), posted it to Reddit and YCombinator. A riveting discussion was had by all. Note: I did not participate in any of the discussions as I had already spoken my piece on this topic. I just enjoyed reading what others had to say about it.

So just how viral did I go? Well in big boy internet terms, not anything to write home about. But the initial surge was about a 100x increase in traffic on my site that quickly ramped down over the next few days. A week later, traffic is still elevated, but much closer to normal levels now. Here are the anonymized versions of the summaries so you can follow along Sans Crawlers and With Crawlers. Note: I will be referring exclusively to the “Sans Crawlers” version of the summary.

Science

↺ different kinds of differential

The problem is that new ephemera are only produced hourly, and the orbits of satellites varies on a minute level too rapidly for hourly observations to keep up with. Additional latency in the upload process means that the ephemera transmitted by GPS satellites can be several hours old. The observations are somewhat limited in precision anyway, considering the incredible precision modern GPS receivers are capable of. So, variation in the actual orbit of satellites from the ephemera leads to ephemeris error in GPS fixes.

Ephemeris error isn’t actually that big of a source of error, but it’s an interesting one so I wanted to talk about it anyway. Besides, it has introduced us to the term “assisted GPS” or “AGPS,” which is unrelated to but often confused with augmentation systems. Assisted GPS just refers to the use of an alternate data path, such as IP, to obtain the current GPS network information that receivers need to make a first fix.

Education

↺ In L.A. Schools, Solidarity Strike Scores Big for Both Unions

When Los Angeles educators joined school support staff on the picket lines last month, our solidarity strike helped them clinch a contract with a 30 percent raise. Riding that wave, yesterday educators reached a tentative agreement of our own, with a 21 percent raise, smaller classes, and improved staffing.

↺ HSE’s transformation into a Kremlin-controlled research institute Meduza explains how the war has changed Russia’s most liberal university — Meduza

For over 30 years, the Higher School of Economics (HSE) was considered Russia’s most liberal university, home to the country’s best researchers and instructors. In recent years, HSE’s image as an independent university has rapidly crumbled. It began to dismiss employees for making political remarks and banned independent student media. HSE nonetheless remains an important research centre and a sought-after place of study for prospective students. Meduza’s special correspondent Margarita Liutova explains how one of Russia’s leading universities has changed since the start of the war and the role that Yaroslav Kuzminov, HSE’s founder and previous rector, has played in these changes.

↺ “I know you are, but what am I? John Leake and Peter McCullough vs. “conspiracy theories”

I have argued that all antivaccine pseudoscience is based on variations of a conspiracy theory that I first dubbed in 2014 the “central conspiracy theory of the antivaccine movement.” Indeed, more than that, I’ve argued that all science denial is a form of conspiracy theory. Unsurprisingly, antivaxxers, quacks, and science deniers who rely on conspiracy theories to support their world view take umbrage at correctly being labeled as conspiracy theorists, to the point that I consider it almost a sine qua non of conspiracy theorists that they will defend their conspiracy theories as being about actual legitimate conspiracies and then engage in projection by accusing those pointing out their conspiracy theories of engaging in—you guessed it!—conspiratorial thinking and conspiracy theories. This brings us to an excellent example of just this phenomenon by John Leake and Dr. Peter McCullough in the form of a post on Dr. McCullough’s Substack by Leake entitled What Is A Conspiracy Theory? While this could be a fact-based description of how to differentiate a conspiracy theory from an actual conspiracy, the tagline (“Examining a pejorative label”) gives the game away. This is about portraying their conspiracy theories as actual conspiracies demonstrated by evidence. It’s all about projection.

↺ WHO releases largest global collection of health inequality data

The World Health Organisation (WHO) today launched the Health Inequality Data Repository (HIDR), the most comprehensive global collection of publicly available disaggregated data and evidence on population health and its determinants. The repository allows for tracking health inequalities across population groups and over time, by breaking down data according to group characteristics, ranging from education level to ethnicity.

↺ The algorithm has reconciled with classical music

But the age of access was better suited to popular music because streaming platforms categorize music using very few attributes (or metadata): artist, album name and song title. These three attributes are enough to find a track by Rosalia or Beyoncé quickly, but not a specific recording of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto. Dozens of performers have recorded this composition, and some more than once. A streaming music platform should at least allow searching by composer, composition, catalog number, movement and performers.

↺ How do you decentralise emergency alerts?

Look, first off, it makes sense for organisations to put warning messages where their audience is likely to see it. No one sensible begrudges that. Twitter is a channel just as legitimate as radio, TV, or loudhailers in the street.

The problem comes when that’s the only channel.

↺ Should we fear the Hyena Code?

Stanford and MILA’s Hyena Hierarchy is a technology for relating items of data, be they words or pixels in a digital image. The technology can reach similar accuracy in benchmark AI tasks as the existing “gold standard” for large language models, the “attention” mechanism, but with as little as 100 times less compute power.

The threat level of cyber security has remained high, and the number of targeted cyber attacks in Finland has increased, according to a press release from Traficom. Finnish organizations are increasingly becoming targets of cyber attacks, and the nature of these attacks has changed. Specifically, the number of targeted attacks, in which the target organization is carefully selected, has increased. Despite this increase, Traficom and the Finnish Security Intelligence Service consider a society-wide cyber attack to be unlikely.

↺ Here’s How You Can Get In On Facebook’s $725 Million Class Action Settlement

A new website is allowing Facebook users to claim their share of a $725 million settlement for a class action lawsuit against Facebook, or Meta. The lawsuit came in response to Meta revealing in 2018 that the data and personal information of around 87 million people was improperly accessed by the data consultation firm Cambridge Analytica—which was used by the Trump campaign. The litigation has been ongoing since 2018, and ended in December of last year with the settlement agreement. Meta denies that it violated any law.

↺ Stop This Dangerous Bill That Would Normalize Face Surveillance in California

EFF opposes this bill, along with more than 50 organizations including ACLU California Action. Together, we have called on the Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee to stop it from moving forward. Join us in saying California should not normalize government use of face recognition technology.

↺ The STOP CSAM Act Would Put Security and Free Speech at Risk

The bill is aimed at removing from the internet child sexual abuse material (CSAM), also known as child pornography. Existing law already requires online service providers who have actual knowledge of “apparent” CSAM on their platforms to report that content to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which is essentially a government entity. ↺ How workers get trapped by “bondage fees”

Now, if you think about it for even a second, it’s obvious that there’s only one way that hiring a doorman through a staffing agency could be cheaper than just hiring the doorman: the staffing agency has to pay the doorman less. A lot less, because the staffing agency is making money here, too – so the doorman is splitting that lower payment with the agency.

The staffing agencies are platforms – just like Facebook, Google, Apple, and Tiktok. They have end-users (apartment dwellers) and business customers (workers who staff apartments), and they intermediate between them, selling one to the other and making money on both sides.

↺ Why I let go of my U.S. citizenship

I forbid myself from anything too tempting or addicting. I keep no cookies in my home. To prevent myself from falling off the wagon, I strap myself to the mast.

Herein lies the paradox of the platform – it is the home of both news and fake news, mainstream media and misinformation. Frequented by politicians and journalists, it is known as the site where news often breaks first. Ironically, news and misinformation have long-thrived on Twitter in tandem.

As a result, Ek is in Washington, D.C., this week to lobby lawmakers to pass a law preventing Apple from engaging in such behavior — a proposition floating around Congress since last year. The Open App Markets Act is a bipartisan bill sponsored by Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN).

↺ Abstraction is great

Yesterday a colleague found a deadlock situation in my code. After I explained in broad terms the whole flow, they asked “what if …?”

Indeed there was a possible deadlock. But afterwards they started trying to prove to me that the deadlock wasn’t possible because “we can see beforehand if we need to lock here”, and I had to tell them that “no, that’s not how that goes, because before we can check if we need to lock, we have first to update some internal state for which we need the lock”. They even made some message sequence diagrams to explain the circumstances.
