↺ The Razer Lambda Tensorbook deep learning laptop is a milestone in pure Linux power

If I’ve ever experienced a more niche piece of hardware, I cannot recall what it was. The Lambda Tensorbook is niche at its best … and I mean that in all positive permutations of the phrase. This laptop is an absolute beast that shrugs off anything you throw at it (especially when you’re doing ML training with the GPU). So if machine learning and AI are your jam (and you’re willing to pony up the $3,499 for the base model), this laptop is what you want.

It’s expensive, it’s heavy, and it can get pretty hot, but when you need unrivaled mobile power for ML/AI, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better option.

↺ Top 10 Open Source Bug and Issue Tracking Tools for Linux

Developers and software engineers build programs with extra care and efficiency. However, the way of developing software demands bug fixing and issue tracking. In this way, after running several beta tests and tracking issues, developers make a tool smooth for a better user experience. In Linux, there are tons of free, paid, and open source bug and issue tracking tools that can help you track down the bugs and get reports from users and testers to make your applications and softwares one step ahead.

↺ 5 Tools to Easily Create a Custom Linux Distro

With so many Linux distros out there, you are probably wondering why someone would want to create their own distro instead of getting a ready-made one. While in most cases a ready-made distro is fine, if you want to have a distro that is 100 percent tailored to your needs, you may have to create your own.

With the right tools, creating your own Linux distro isn’t as hard as it seems, though it takes time for sure. There are many tools for the purpose – some of them are universal, and some of them are distro-specific. Here are a few of them.

↺ How To Install MariaDB on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS – idroot

In this tutorial, we will show you how to install MariaDB on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. For those of you who didn’t know, MariaDB is an open-source relational database management system, commonly used as an alternative to MySQL. It being a MySQL fork implies that MariaDB offers similar features and performance metrics with the advantage of being free and completely open-source.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo‘ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you the step-by-step installation of the MariaDB open-source database server on Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy Jellyfish). You can follow the same instructions for Ubuntu 22.04 and any other Debian-based distribution like Linux Mint, Elementary OS, Pop!_OS, and more as well.

↺ Use Quickemu to Run Windows, macOS & Linux Virtual Machines

Virtualization is one of the most popular technologies utilized by most people and organizations who want to run multiple systems on single server hardware.

Also, most cloud platforms (if not all) use virtual machines to host customer data and services.

Some of the most popular Virtualization platforms are VMware and VirtualBox.

Vmware is a commercial app, and you will need to pay a subscription fee, while the latter is free and open-source.

If you are a Linux user, there is a relatively new software that you can use to spin Virtual machines – Quickkemu.

QuickEmu is a command-line wrapper for the popular Virtualization tool known as Qemu.

↺ Install PostgreSQL Server & Client on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy

In this tutorial, we will learn how to install PostgreSQL Database Client and Server on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy JellyFish using the command terminal.

PostgreSQL Database is a object-relational database management system (ORDBMS). It differs from relational database management systems such as MySQL in that even complex data objects can be stored relationally in the database. It is distributed under a free BSD license and can be used platform-independently. PostgreSQL is a free database management system that appeared in 1996.

↺ How to Install & Use Bottles to Run Windows Apps on Linux

One of the biggest hurdles for Windows users switching to Linux is the application compatibility issue.

Some of the apps that you could efficiently run on Windows don’t include support for Linux systems. Some of the most affected categories of users are gamers and graphic designers.

A very high percentage of all the games and graphic software developed only support Windows and maybe macOS. Games and apps like Adobe (Photoshop), Microsoft Office, .NET Framework, Starcraft, and many more are only available for Windows.

↺ Pages that didn’t make it into “How DNS Works”

When I started writing that zine (in, uh, January 2021), I originally had in mind a broader zine on “everything you need to know to own a domain”. So it had a bunch of pages on domain registration, TLS, and email.

At the time I thought “I can just explain DNS in like 5 pages, it’s not that complicated, there will be lots of space for other topics about domains”. I was extremely wrong about that and it turned out I needed all 28 pages to explain DNS. So I ended up deciding to just focus the zine on DNS and all those other topics didn’t make it into the final zine.

↺ How to Install JAVA JDK on AlmaLinux 8, CentOS 8 and Rocky Linux 8 – OSNote

Java is a popular programming language used to build a variety of apps and websites. But what is the real story of Java, and who uses it?

Java has been around since 1995. It was released by Sun Microsystems as a programming language for “smart” consumer devices, particularly those with multimedia capabilities. This included interactive television systems as well as some early smartphones. Much later on, in 2006, Oracle Corporation acquired Sun Microsystems, and with it the Java programming language. However, this isn’t why most people know about Java today.

↺ How to Install Hyper Terminal in Ubuntu – OSNote

Any Ubuntu release includes several command-line interfaces (CLIs) that you may use to suit your unique requirements. The console’s adaptability and simplicity of use are enhanced by its development in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Hyper Terminal also provides a wide selection of additional features, and that’s why the bulk of people prefer it. As just a consequence, this article will show you how to install Hyper Terminal. ↺ EndeavorOS is an Arch Linux distribution for all | ZDNet

If you’ve ever dipped your toes into the Linux waters, you’ve probably heard of Arch Linux. On the scale of Ubuntu (user friendly) to incredibly challenging (Gentoo), pure Arch Linux lands somewhere near the top. But even Arch Linux is making strides to achieve a much more user-friendly platform (such is the case with the release of the new menu-based installer).

But for those who want to lower the barrier of entry for Arch Linux, there are options, one of which is EndeavorOS. This version of Arch Linux strives to be accessible and usable to anyone, regardless of skill level. And although EndeavorOS isn’t nearly as user-friendly as the likes of Ubuntu and Linux Mint, it is at least considerably easier to install than pure Arch Linux. And the inclusion of a handy Welcome app makes getting up to speed with EndeavorOS a fairly painless process.

Recently, the developers launched the latest version of EndeavorOS, Apollo, and although it includes all the tools necessary to make it a power user’s dream distribution, I’m confident this new release would feel right at home under the fingers of someone who has only recently discovered Linux.

↺ Kubernetes in Docker Desktop Just Got Easier with Epinio | SUSE Communities

Epinio takes developers from application to URL in one step. In this blog post, I’m going to tell you about the new Epinio extension for Docker Desktop, that allows you to run Epinio on your laptop. DevOps are very interested in the details of containerized workloads and Kubernetes especially, but for developers, the abstraction layer provided by Kubernetes might not be too relevant to their daily work. And managing a Kubernetes cluster certainly is above and beyond for most application developers.

However, deploying an application with Epinio is possible with very little Kubernetes knowledge. On a real cluster, Epinio also offers several advantages to operators, but that is a story for another post.

↺ Fedora Linux 36 Is Now Available for Download, This Is What’s New

Fedora 36, Red Hat’s free Linux distro, brings an updated desktop experience and some behind-the-scenes tweaks.

Red Hat’s community Linux distro Fedora version 36 rolled out in beta on March 28, 2022, and today, almost a month later, Fedora 36 is officially released and available for download.

While the emphasis remains on a desktop PC with cutting-edge everything, Fedora 36 focuses on extending existing features and improving support. It’s a nice middle-of-the-road update that combines the new features we’ve seen in recent Fedora and GNOME desktop releases and some refinements.

So without further ado, let’s get started by inspecting what’s new.

↺ Release Notes

This document provides the release notes for Fedora Linux 36. It describes major changes offered as compared to Fedora Linux 35.

↺ Fedora 36 released [LWN.net]

↺ How To Upgrade To Fedora 36 : Fedora Linux 36 Released | Itsubuntu.com

Fedora Linux 36 is now officially available for download. You can download Fedora Linux 36 right now from the official website. Fedora Linux 36 is powered by Linux Kernel 5.17. You will find the GNOME 42 desktop environment on Fedora 36.

↺ Fedora Linux 36 is finally here and it is much better than Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a great Linux-based operating system that seems to get all the attention. Truth be told, however, Fedora is the better Linux distribution. Hell, some would argue it is the overall best distro. Quite frankly, if you are an open source champion, you should be using Fedora. It is the perfect no-nonsense distribution, and best of all. it largely focuses on truly free and open source software.

Today, following some delays, Fedora 36 finally becomes available for download. While hardly an exciting update, this new version of the Linux-based operating system is notable for utilizing GNOME 42 and kernel 5.17. Plus, for those using an NVIDIA GPU and driver, you will now get Wayland by default. You can read full release notes here.

Acknowledging the rather lackluster update, Matthew Miller, Fedora project leader explains, “Sometimes small improvements can make a big impact. This latest version of Fedora Linux brings many under-the-hood improvements for a variety of use cases. This helps us fulfill our mission: we make an innovative platform for hardware, clouds, and containers that enables software developers and community members to build tailored solutions for their users.”

↺ Create Impact Change with the 2022 Call for Code

↺ this goes on

I am always amazed at the impact we all have coming together, using our collective talents for good. Combining our collective brain power, skills, time, and resources produces stellar results – maybe it is better rendering management for films that entertain with mind-bending CGIs or improving automated software testing and deployment so developers can spend more time on innovation. Human ingenuity is amazing!

↺ Introducing Red Hat OpenShift extension for Docker Desktop

The extension aims to provide a bridge from your local environment to the environments where you run your applications.

↺ Fueling the spark of innovation

Open source can fan the sparks of potential around the world, unlike any system that has ever existed. It solves two fundamental problems that limit innovation:…

↺ Red Hat CEO Paul Cormier: The new normal for IT starts with open source

Globally we saw nearly every industry go to 100% remote working overnight. Regardless of industry and size, organizations learned to operate virtually and on-demand. Companies needed to deliver goods and services to customers without a set brick-and-mortar footprint. We saw new tech hubs emerge in unlikely places because workers we no longer bound by needing to be based in specific cities. Newly-remote workers realized that they didn’t have to be tied to a physical office, and organizations focused on hiring new talent based on skill and not location.

↺ Red Hat Defines a New Epicenter for Innovation with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9

Red Hat, Inc., the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today introduced Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9, the Linux operating system designed to drive more consistent innovation across the open hybrid cloud, from bare metal servers to cloud providers and the farthest edge of enterprise networks. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 is designed to drive enterprise transformation in parallel with evolving market forces and customer demands in an automated and distributed IT world. The platform will be generally available in the coming weeks.

↺ At last, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.0 slips out

Red Hat has officially lifted the lid on version 9 of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), code-named Plow, the latest major version of the dominant paid-for, commercial server Linux.

This release aims to roll out features and functionality without being too different from its older siblings.

Version 9 represents a number of firsts. It’s the first major release since IBM’s acquisition of Red Hat concluded in July 2019 – RHEL 8.0 came out two months before. It’s also the first major version of the enterprise distribution since Red Hat redefined its free enterprise distro CentOS as being upstream of RHEL rather than a rebuild of it.

The Reg looked at the beta last year. This release is based on Fedora 34, which we covered in March last year. That means several significant changes for desktop users, including GNOME 40, which should run on Wayland by default, the Pipewire audio server, and incremental updates to Flatpak packages.

↺ Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9: Security baked in | ZDNet

Boston: Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) has been the Linux for business for a generation now. Today, RHEL touches more than $13 trillion of the global economy. Remember when people used to think Linux couldn’t handle big business? Ha! With the release of RHEL 9 at the Red Hat Summit in Boston, Red Hat improved its offerings from the open hybrid cloud to bare metal servers to cloud providers and the farthest edge of enterprise networks.

↺ Video: RHEL 9 released

As predicted, RHEL9 was released today.. as was RHEL 8.6 and Fedora 36. Big release day. Here’s a marketing video on the new release. I’m sure more videos, some with actual technical content, will follow.

↺ Daniele Scasciafratte & Mozilla, OSCAL, Albania dating

Debian Community News has also published evidence that many of the women who received travel bursaries are not publishing code.

It is obvious that many of the women in red t-shirts are being paid to attend the Albanian conferences and pretend to be volunteers. They come and sit in the workshops to make the room look full. They ask questions and then at the end of the day they all disappear. There is no follow up on any of the topics presented. As soon as they receive their cash payment at the end of the day, all these women vanish.

If this is so obvious, why do the leaders of free software organizations continue to give their developers travel funds to go to events in Albania?

↺ 46 Sign OS Freedom Open Letter +++ Fair Market App +++ Your Digital Rights

The EU is redefining their ecodesign criteria for environmentally friendly electronics. The FSFE provided input by publishing an open letter demanding the right to install any software on any electronic device. This right would allow to keep our devices longer, but it requires manufacturers to follow certain rules. For example, manufacturers must be required to unlock bootloaders on all devices, including computers, tablets and phones; they must also publish full specifications for every component on the device. This allows us and any third party to better repair our devices, and even reuse parts of them. The use of Open Standards is also necessary for devices to communicate and operate with each other.

Initially 38 organisations agreed on the necessity of these conditions and signed the open letter before publication. It is still possible to sign the letter and more than 45 organisations have now signed. It speaks volumes that tech companies, right to repair initiatives, and important environmental organisations support the right to install any software on any device.

↺ Five Senses

I’ve always wondered why there are five senses while to me it didn’t seem like salt and sour were the same sense, or why prickly and warm were the same sense, or why dark and green were the same sense. But I’m rereading The Treasury of the Dharma Eye, and Dōgen explains it in his explication of the Heart sutra. Eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin, and mind. I guess that’s how they organized ‘em back then.

I bristled at this teaching in grade school (in “lågstadiet”) because it felt like we were being taught an oversimplification, a falsehood, a myth.

↺ Docker Desktop for Linux finally arrives

↺ in awful hands since the interference and takeover

Docker Desktop is an easy-to-use Docker container integrated development environment (IDE). It includes Docker Engine, Docker CLI client, Docker Compose, Docker Content Trust, Kubernetes, and Credential Helper. With it, you can easily build and share containerized applications and microservices. There’s only been one problem: It hasn’t been available for the Linux desktop.

↺ In Memory of Shubhra Kar

This past week, we lost our dear friend, colleague, and a true champion of the open source community. Our CTO, Shubhra Kar, passed away suddenly while he was with his entire LF family at our first in-person, all-hands gathering since before the pandemic.

Those who had the honor to work with him will know, he was a special leader and a wonderful human being. Above all, Shubhra was the kind of leader who quickly passed the credit for accomplishments to his team over himself. His humble spirit and ever-present smile was admired by all around him. He was so proud of the world class team he had built here, and did that in part with engineers who followed him from one organization to another throughout his career.

Security

↺ Ben Hutchings: Debian LTS work, April 2022

I spent most of my time triaging security issues for Linux, working out which of them were fixed upstream and which actually applied to the versions provided in Debian 9 “stretch”. I also rebased the Linux 4.9 (linux) package on the latest stable update, but did not make an upload this month.

↺ Microsoft Releases Security Advisory for Azure Data Factory and Azure Synapse Pipelines

↺ CISA Adds One Known Exploited Vulnerability to Catalog

CISA has added one new vulnerability to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, based on evidence of active exploitation. These types of vulnerabilities are a frequent attack vector for malicious cyber actors and pose significant risk to the federal enterprise. Note: to view the newly added vulnerability in the catalog, click on the arrow on the of the “Date Added to Catalog” column, which will sort by descending dates.

↺ The Rust Programming Language Blog: Security advisory: malicious crate rustdecimal

The Rust Security Response WG and the crates.io team were notified on 2022-05-02 of the existence of the malicious crate rustdecimal, which contained malware. The crate name was intentionally similar to the name of the popular rust_decimal crate, hoping that potential victims would misspell its name (an attack called “typosquatting”).

To protect the security of the ecosystem, the crates.io team permanently removed the crate from the registry as soon as it was made aware of the malware. An analysis of all the crates on crates.io was also performed, and no other crate with similar code patterns was found.

↺ in bed with the biggest culprit

The OpenSSF has announced a prototype version of the Package Analysis project, aimed at identifying malicious packages in popular open source repositories in order to better secure critical projects.

Censorship/Free Speech

↺ It has to be the radio, Ebba!

Ebba Busch is boycotting the Swedish radio because in their Arabic, Somali, and Kurdish transmissions they translated her desire to shoot “islamists” as her wanting to shoot “muslims“.

[...]

I’ll end the way I started: the way they did translate it was not good, even though they were put in a very difficult bind.

Civil Rights/Policing

↺ Technocracy Rising with Patrick Wood

In this episode, Whitney and Patrick Wood discuss the historic roots of the technocratic movement, its development and relevance to current events as well as the ulterior motives behind the so-called “green” agenda and the Data-centered “religions” of Silicon Valley.

↺ Daniel Kahn Gillmor: 2022 Digital Rights Job Fair

I’m lucky enough to work at the intersection between information communications technology and civil rights/civil liberties. I get to combine technical interests and social/political interests.

I’ve talked with many folks over the years who are interested in doing similar work. Some come from a technical background, and some from an activist background (and some from both). Are you one of them? Are you someone who works as an activist or in a technical field who wants to look into different ways of meging these interests?
