But for those who want to lower the barrier of entry for Arch Linux, there are options, one of which is EndeavorOS. This version of Arch Linux strives to be accessible and usable to anyone, regardless of skill level. And although EndeavorOS isn’t nearly as user-friendly as the likes of Ubuntu and Linux Mint, it is at least considerably easier to install than pure Arch Linux. And the inclusion of a handy Welcome app makes getting up to speed with EndeavorOS a fairly painless process.
Recently, the developers launched the latest version of EndeavorOS, Apollo, and although it includes all the tools necessary to make it a power user’s dream distribution, I’m confident this new release would feel right at home under the fingers of someone who has only recently discovered Linux.

Epinio takes developers from application to URL in one step. In this blog post, I’m going to tell you about the new Epinio extension for Docker Desktop, that allows you to run Epinio on your laptop. DevOps are very interested in the details of containerized workloads and Kubernetes especially, but for developers, the abstraction layer provided by Kubernetes might not be too relevant to their daily work. And managing a Kubernetes cluster certainly is above and beyond for most application developers.
However, deploying an application with Epinio is possible with very little Kubernetes knowledge. On a real cluster, Epinio also offers several advantages to operators, but that is a story for another post.

Red Hat’s community Linux distro Fedora version 36 rolled out in beta on March 28, 2022, and today, almost a month later, Fedora 36 is officially released and available for download.
While the emphasis remains on a desktop PC with cutting-edge everything, Fedora 36 focuses on extending existing features and improving support. It’s a nice middle-of-the-road update that combines the new features we’ve seen in recent Fedora and GNOME desktop releases and some refinements.

Ubuntu is a great Linux-based operating system that seems to get all the attention. Truth be told, however, Fedora is the better Linux distribution. Hell, some would argue it is the overall best distro. Quite frankly, if you are an open source champion, you should be using Fedora. It is the perfect no-nonsense distribution, and best of all. it largely focuses on truly free and open source software.
Today, following some delays, Fedora 36 finally becomes available for download. While hardly an exciting update, this new version of the Linux-based operating system is notable for utilizing GNOME 42 and kernel 5.17. Red Hat has officially lifted the lid on version 9 of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), code-named Plow, the latest major version of the dominant paid-for, commercial server Linux.
This release aims to roll out features and functionality without being too different from its older siblings.
Version 9 represents a number of firsts. It’s the first major release since IBM’s acquisition of Red Hat concluded in July 2019 – RHEL 8.0 came out two months before. It’s also the first major version of the enterprise distribution since Red Hat redefined its free enterprise distro CentOS as being upstream of RHEL rather than a rebuild of it.
The Reg looked at the beta last year. This release is based on Fedora 34, which we covered in March last year. That means several significant changes for desktop users, including GNOME 40, which should run on Wayland by default, the Pipewire audio server, and incremental updates to Flatpak packages.
Boston: Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) has been the Linux for business for a generation now. Today, RHEL touches more than $13 trillion of the global economy. Remember when people used to think Linux couldn’t handle big business? Ha! With the release of RHEL 9 at the Red Hat Summit in Boston, Red Hat improved its offerings from the open hybrid cloud to bare metal servers to cloud providers and the farthest edge of enterprise networks.

It is obvious that many of the women in red t-shirts are being paid to attend the Albanian conferences and pretend to be volunteers. They come and sit in the workshops to make the room look full. They ask questions and then at the end of the day they all disappear. There is no follow up on any of the topics presented. As soon as they receive their cash payment at the end of the day, all these women vanish.

This week, the Multipass team announced a new version of the VM manager and local mini-cloud. Multipass makes it easy to run Linux virtual machines on Mac, Windows, and Linux hosts by providing a streamlined CLI that abstracts away the admin overhead of working with VMs.
This new update comes with some exciting new features, including enhanced networking and suspend capabilities on macOS, and the ability to authenticate clients, which allows Multipass to run as an unprivileged user. Last but not least: this update enables Multipass users to run our 22.04 Ubuntu release, Jammy Jellyfish, on Mac and Windows.
[Penk] has Ubuntu 22.04 LTS loaded up right now, and he reports that everything works as expected, though there are a few xrandr commands you’ll need to run in order for the system to work properly with the circular display. The astonishing PicoPuter emulation project can run a transputer emulator on multiple Raspberry Pi Picos, and clustering them using the transputer’s native inter-processor link protocol.

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has open-sourced a federated learning platform it claims protects privacy by enabling the development of machine learning algorithms without having to share training data.
The EU is redefining their ecodesign criteria for environmentally friendly electronics. The FSFE provided input by publishing an open letter demanding the right to install any software on any electronic device. This right would allow to keep our devices longer, but it requires manufacturers to follow certain rules. For example, manufacturers must be required to unlock bootloaders on all devices, including computers, tablets and phones; they must also publish full specifications for every component on the device. This allows us and any third party to better repair our devices, and even reuse parts of them. The use of Open Standards is also necessary for devices to communicate and operate with each other.
Initially 38 organisations agreed on the necessity of these conditions and signed the open letter before publication. It is still possible to sign the letter and more than 45 organisations have now signed. It speaks volumes that tech companies, right to repair initiatives, and important environmental organisations support the right to install any software on any device.
It is written in Angular and can be either used as a standalone desktop application or as a static webpage with WASM bindings and an API server to generate PDFs.

The board of the Free Software Foundation (FSF) today published a board matrix of fundamental requisites and valuable attributes that will be used to evaluate nominees for the FSF board of directors. Nominations are not yet open, but the board also published a preview of the form that associate members will soon use to submit their nominations of candidates for the board.
“As we prepare to add new directors to the FSF board, the board needs to state the requirements and qualities that should be used to assess nominees,” said FSF president Geoffrey Knauth. “Current board members who wish to continue to serve the FSF will also be reviewed based on these expectations, once new directors are on the board.”

This past week, we lost our dear friend, colleague, and a true champion of the open source community. Our CTO, Shubhra Kar, passed away suddenly while he was with his entire LF family at our first in-person, all-hands gathering since before the pandemic.
Those who had the honor to work with him will know, he was a special leader and a wonderful human being. Above all, Shubhra was the kind of leader who quickly passed the credit for accomplishments to his team over himself. His humble spirit and ever-present smile was admired by all around him. He was so proud of the world class team he had built here, and did that in part with engineers who followed him from one organization to another throughout his career.
I spent most of my time triaging security issues for Linux, working out which of them were fixed upstream and which actually applied to the versions provided in Debian 9 “stretch”. I also rebased the Linux 4.9 (linux) package on the latest stable update, but did not make an upload this month.
Microsoft has released a security advisory to address a remote code execution vulnerability affecting Azure Data Factory and Azure Synapse Pipelines. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to take control of an affected system.

Description: Processor optimization removal or modification of security-critical code for some Intel(R) Processors may allow an authenticated user to potentially enable information disclosure via local access.
The Rust Security Response WG and the crates.io team were notified on 2022-05-02 of the existence of the malicious crate rustdecimal, which contained malware. The crate name was intentionally similar to the name of the popular rust_decimal crate, hoping that potential victims would misspell its name (an attack called “typosquatting”).
To protect the security of the ecosystem, the crates.io team permanently removed the crate from the registry as soon as it was made aware of the malware. An analysis of all the crates on crates.io was also performed, and no other crate with similar code patterns was found.
The OpenSSF has announced a prototype version of the Package Analysis project, aimed at identifying malicious packages in popular open source repositories in order to better secure critical projects.
