Gemroll

The following is what I consider to be useful content and resources across geminispace.

Getting Started

If you're new to gemini, I highly suggest starting with @solderpunk's FAQ (creator of Gemini). Yes, it's lengthy, but in it @solderpunk explains the essence and intent of gemini, answers the most common questions about the project, and provides resources to get you started.

Creating and Managing a Capsule on a Server You Own

Managing a Capsule

Tildes

As mentioned on the front page of this capsule, Tildes provide a public unix community experience. Each server has its own setup but most offer gemini, gopher, and web hosting on their site

Tildeverse.org - Main website for tilde community members -- find one to join here

A great way to find content is to browse random tilde user's capsules. Here's a few tilde's:

Tilde.Club

Ctrl-C.Club

Tilde.Pink

Cosmic.Voyage (Sci-Fi themed)

There's also a Tilde Mastodon Instance:

Tilde.Zone

Social & Gemlogging

BBS (Bulletin Board System) on Geminispace -- by @skyjake

➢ Full-featured commenting and gemlogging system. This and Station should be your first stops if you're looking for social interactions with fellow geminauts. Note that this is NOT all of geminispace, but a nice feature to allow travelers the ability to mingle a bit easier than replies via gemlogs or tinylogs.

=>gemini://station.martinrue.com Station -- by @martin

➢ Social network of tinylogs. Comments and liking, with frontpage aggregation. Probably the most well-known and functional social network in geminispace. See below for more on Tinylogs

=>https://codeberg.org/bacardi55/gemini-tinylog-rfc Tinylog RFC

➢ Format definition for Tinylogs - microblog posts a-la Twitter that reside in a single file. You can subscribe to tinylog feeds using GTL (see below)

=>https://github.com/bacardi55/gtl/ GTL

➢ A TUI (Terminal UI) that you can use to subscribe to tinylogs. It stitches logs into a timeline for easy reading. It can also output your subscriptions to a .gmi file on your capsule so you don't have to actually go into the app to see your timeline.

Gemlog Services & Communities

Gemlog.blue

➢ A gemlog hosting site that provides a regular web interface manage your capsule. This is great for newcomers who don't always want to (or aren't ready to) ssh into a site in order to post a gemlog.

Midnight Pub

➢ A themed gemlog community with commenting system

Nightfall City

➢ Another themed community, except this one is a listing of other capsules and websites fitting the theme. Separated into 'districts'

Smol Pub

➢ A tinylog service. Dual web and gemini posting, with a web front end.

Content Aggregation Services

=>gemini://warmedal.se/~antenna/ Antenna -- by @ew0k

➢ User-driven gemlog aggregator. Users submit their logs for publication vs pull by aggregator

Deep Space Network (DSN) Antenna

➢ A clone of Antenna for non-technical gemlogs. Currently requires a separate, non-technical gemlog for submissions

=>gemini://skyjake.fi/~Cosmos/view.gmi Cosmos

➢ Super-aggregator: aggregator of aggreagators that groups conversations/replies between capsules

Content Discovery

I like to browse the user directories of of the gemlog hosters and also the tilde community. You can find some surprising gems there. There's also content discovery tools besides the search engines

Discogem -- by @bacardi55

➢ Discogem serves up 5 random capsules from the known geminispace. You can subscribe to the feed in your favorite client so you can surf new capsules every day.

Collaborative Directory of Geminispace -- by @thegonz

➢ As the name states, this is a user-curated directory of gemini pages

Games

Spellbinding

➢ Highly addictive (for me) word game where you try to find as many words as you can given a subset of 7 letters. Includes points and leaderboard.

Wordo

➢ A wordle clone

Word Tunneler

➢ Try to get from the starter word to the ending word by changing one letter at a time.

Where in the World

➢ Try to guess a country based on its ascii-art depiction

Astrobotany

➢ Grow ascii-art plants from seeds by watering and caring for it. Visit the community garden, water other people's plants, and buy items at the shop, like fertilizer and a synthesizer.
