I've only been on Gemini just over a year and I've already seen some ebbs and flows. It seems every couple of months an article will pop up with some hate or distaste for Gemini and it'll cause some heartache. I'm already starting to see the same arguments, which kind of goes like this:
---
"Gemini sucks, it could've been cool but they handcuffed it"
response
"that's what we like about it. It's about the community. No ads, big brother, etc."
---
"Gemini is boring, there's no content. I want in-line images"
response
"You didn't dig deep enough. The beauty of Gemini is in the search - nothing is spoon fed"
---
"Gemini is a bunch of nerdy elitists - the barrier for entry is too high"
response
"We welcome everyone and are working to make it simpler for everyone to join"
---
And the list goes on, but that's basically it. I'm not saying that I'm tired of it, I'm actually kind of happy that the dug-in gemini supporters like myself can still defend this space... but my question is, why do we even have to? I think anyone who doesn't like Gemini who posts about it on Gemini has a simple solution: just stop using it. You'll just be another dead link or mothballed capsule that we'll skip over in our searches for new content, and it doesn't bother me none. I think a lot of these comments come from people who've tried it out for a while, and realized that having to SSH into their capsule to post some content is way more cumbersome than using their phone or computer with a very convenient and intuitive web interface. I GET IT, I really do. Go for it, go do that. I'm not mad, I'm not angry, not even concerned because the web IS easier and more intuitive, there's more content, and it's faster (in the countryside vs city aspect). As a few other people put it, we Geminauts will simply stay here like the people on Gopher have been doing for years. Capsules come, capsules go. Some are updated all the time (sometimes multiple times a day), and others, like mine, are when I finally have some free time away from work and kids. But between posts I spend most of my internet time on Gemini: watering my plant on #astrobotany, playing #spellbinding, checking my feeds, discovering new capsules on #Discogem, and reading posts of people that I like to follow. I don't use Twitter, I don't use Mastodon, no Insta, FB, TikTok, or any of that garbage. I just don't like it anymore, it's too much, and that's why I think I'll stay here.
So if anyone actually reads this post, don't take it as hate, take it as passivity. You do you, and I'll do me. I'm quite happy where I am.
