> “To be alive in this beautiful, self-organizing universe – to participate in the dance of life with senses to perceive it, lungs that breathe it, organs that draw nourishment from it – is a wonder beyond words.” —Joanna Macy
Small farming, in the era of climate change, is a gesture of hope and surrender. Hope, that the human connection to earth can heal the disconnection modern society has engineered; and surrender, to the great divine, because the unknowns are far too heavy to carry alone.
Farming is hard work, terribly underpaid, and, for the most part, underappreciated by the masses. As I write I can tell you that we can make, on one website job, nearly double what we'll make for an entire season of farming. As first-generation farmers we are entering raw; fueled with a hunger gnawing from our marrow, with a motivation that goes so far beyond monetary it might just defibrillate the world.
short-term rewards for long-term consequences
dependency on machines fueled by dependencies on finite/destructive resources
to leave this lethargic planet, even if it's just the soil we touch, better than we found it
for every decision we make to consider every stakeholder on this planet, micro and macro
to resurrect the sacredness of nature and of our own existence
to nourish and not simply feed those who eat the harvests of this effort
