this practice project solves a few issues:
practice working with an overlocker
zips
practice making useful zip bags
i used:
cutting mat and rotary cutter
a zip longer than the width of the bag
outdoor material - but use what you want or have
overlocker - i used my Bernina L460
sewing machine for optional top stitches
thread obviously
this is my take on this project (standing on the shoulders, etc):
cut out material to a size smaller than the length of the zip.
right side zip to right side material, clip if you need.
overlock the edge, lining up the foot with the zip so that you do not sew into the zip teeth.
repeat for the other edge; with care to duplicate what you did with the first edge.
top stitch the zip if you want, or not if you don't. care needed to avoid sewing through a random part of the bag that might come under the foot unseen; work to only stitch the material alongside the zip. i'm still working on that so a couple of wobbles and stop starts for me:-)
open the zip so that it is inside the width of the bag! if you do not do this you will have sewed a zipped up bag that does not have a zipper to open it:-)
optionally roll the zip down the material as far as you like so that the zip opening will be in one side of the bag rather than the top. i did this for this project.
overlock the two open sides. if you have a plastic zip you can overlock through the zip when you come to it. if you have a metal zip stop the overlock before reaching the zip teeth.
turn the bag right side out.
bask in our making skills:-) or in my case notice that i can do better:-)
word is that pins and overlockers need great care to avoid the overlocker knife cutting a pin. this could be bad for pin, bad for overlocker knife, bad for us if a now fast moving shard of pin comes our way. **use clips with overlockers, not pins** same goes for metal zips!
