stable overnight, temperatures still low and stable, fans quiet, but could also be the psu. yes, i didn't change the 450 watt psu (head slap). so possibly running out of pwr with unintended oc? talking to pc shop guy the vrm (voltage regulator module) on the asrock b450 could be an issue with a 3900x and only 450 watts. howenever.... machine freezing then fail boot.

fatality is dead!

PSU to 850 Watt.

fatality still dead apart from ram leds on 850 watt psu, ram leds and gpu fan work on 450 watt psu.

a bit of post lockdown madness: AMD 3900x replaced my 2600 on a asrock b450 fatality mini-itx. seemed ok at first but over time and as i changed bios settings (fans) the machine would sometimes flat line. i've worked out (or not) that this may be bios related. it is on the latest bios 4.40 as i type. the clue may be reset bios settings and changing fan speeds when the crash happens.

latest attempt to resolve was to reset bios settings (not version) and manually oc (overclock) to the default processor speed; 3800Mhz. I have also disabled overheat protection because if the temps i read are correct then it was not overheating, or close to.

interesting, outcome: CPU temp 25 C lower for same load (50% doing protein folding) and lower fan speeds!!! i suspect that the board was doing some FWitery oc or really has no idea how to run the 3900x on auto.

another change was to remove both side panels and the front grille: now just about an open chassis case. the effect was to take another 4C off the CPU temp.
