Happy to announce a new release of GemiNaut today after a number of weeks of work.
The main change in 0.8.6 release is that GemiNaut now supports Gopher, so you can now browse Gopher space using your favourite graphical client. Due to the lack of accessible clients, there have perhaps not been so many Windows users exploring the gopher holes for many years. I've been discovering gopher space for myself in testing GemiNaut and whilst it is a slower medium than Gemini, there is quite a lot of thoughtful writing to discover - so you can now venture forth, intrepid explorers.
Some useful gopher starting points include:
Gophermaps and text pages are shown using the same theming engine and there is a user friendly algorithm to auto-link urls in Gopher text pages and to display a title based on the page address.
There is also an update to the "Fabric" theme, where each site and user has its own theme. Previously we used Gravatar to render the placemarker icons, but GemiNaut builds its own using the Jdenticon library. The place marker icons and background fabric now have a bit more visual richness to them, and load faster. The previous theme is still there as the "classic" Fabric theme.
There have been some UI improvements, for example the bookmarks window is larger and preformatted text areas now have their own scrollbars when needed.
Finally, I'd like to make a shout out to makeworld who has updated the gemget utility and also to prologic for their go-gopher library, both of which provide basis of the solid underlying content retrieval layer within GemiNaut.
