Smells

2021-04-30

The sense of smell is long known to have a strong tie to memory in the brain. Still, when this phenomenon smacks you right in the nostrils it is pretty surreal. This afternoon I went for a walk around the neighborhood and the smell of a flower reminiscent of honeysuckle wafted in the air. Very vivid images of my grandparent's backyard immediately started swimming through my mind. Thick green grass. Walking with my arms outstretched along the ridge of the brick retainer wall that ran parallel to the back fence. The fence itself barely visible for the mass of honeysuckle that engulfed it. I could almost taste the drops of sweet nectar that we would suck from the flowers we picked while waiting for dinner to be ready.

I love going for walks because it allows my mind to wander and it almost always goes some place unexpected, interesting or enlightening. If you haven't gone for a walk in a while I highly recommend making the time to go for one occasionally. Good for the body and also for the mind.
