Solar alert

Issued on 2023 Dec 30 1328 UTC

A slow partial halo coronal mass ejection (CME) with projected velocity around 400 km/s was observed by the LASCO/C2 coronagraph around 03:24 UTC on Dec 27th. A faster north-east partial halo CME is visible in the LASCO/C2 coronagraph imagery around 23:24 UTC on Dec 28th. Both CMEs have no clear on disc signatures and are deemed to be back-sided with no expected impact on Earth. The faint and slow (below 300 km/s) partial halo CME from Dec 25th has mildly disturbed the solar wind conditions near Earth throughout Dec 29th. As predicted for this CME, no significant impact on Earth was observed. The interplanetary magnetic field showed only weak enhancements and the geomagnetic conditions remained globally quiet.
