Major geomagnetic storm (G3) was registered on March 23rd with NOAA Kp reaching 7 in the interval between 13h and 15h UTC. The geomagnetic storm was triggered by enhanced solar wind conditions possibly due to the arrival of a partial halo CME which lifted off the solar surface on March 20th or alternatively due to an expected CIR in front of a high speed stream (HSS) arrival. A combination of CIR/HSS and the anticipated ICME is also a possible explanation for the observed solar wind conditions. The interplanetary geomagnetic field reached a magnitude of 22 nT shortly after 14 UTC on March 23rd with a north-south component reaching a value of -13 nT earlier around 10:55 UTC. The solar wind speed for the period is around 500 km/s and the magnetic field remains around 20 nT at the time of writing. Further major storms are unlikely, but minor to moderate storms can be expected with the anticipated arrival of a high speed stream on March 23rd and March 24th.
