Solar alert

Issued on 2021 May 12 0959 UTC

Solar wind parameters show a fast forward shock as measured by DSCOVR data at 05:49 UT. Speed jumped from 320 to 430 km/s, the magnetic field from 5 to 22 nT, the density from 10 to 20 cm-3, and the temperature from 50.000 K to 250.000 K. The Kp and local K indices have risen to the active level (Kp=4 and K Dourbes= 4). This shock is likely caused by the ICME already predictited to arrive later today.

Issued on 2021 May 12 1614 UTC

The fast forward shock that reach Earth at 05:49 UT caused NOAA Kp index value of 7 (strong geomagnetic storm) for the synoptic period of 12:00 - 15:00UT. For the synoptic period of 15:00 - 18:00 UT the index value dropped to 6 (moderate geomagnetic storm). The local K Dourbes index value was 6 (moderate geomagnetic storm) between 14:00-16:00 UT. The geomagnetic activity is expected to decline significantly in the next 24 hours.
