About the Tarsnap outage

They are never happy.

Colin Percival (cperciva) published a post-mortem about the outage Tarsnap suffered from at the beginning of july.

The report

It's a nice write-up about what happened that night, with every step Colin did to restore the service.

Of course, the discussion on that cesspool that is Hacker News, promptly moved to the fact that Tarsnap is, on average, more expensive compared to other online backup solutions. However, given how Tarsnap is built, I strongly believe that, in a lot of use cases, you will end-up paying less, in total, for storage costs, given the quality of it's compression and deduplication code.

Don't stop just at the prices.

I'll continue to suggest tarsnap wherever it makes sense, it's just too good of a service.

Tarsnap design

P.S.: This is the first post I publish from my e-mail, I'll write about that.
