AmigaOS 4 SDK 54.16 released

5 October 2022

After so many months of work and a lot of testing, the new SDK 54.16 is available for everyone to download and use. This release is much bigger than the older ones, because a lot of tools were added, as well as new GCC versions.

Yeap, the new SDK comes with multiple versions of GCC, which can be used in parallel. So a developer can compile an application with the default GCC 8 or can choose between the other versions like 6, 10 and 11. Of course, during the installation process, the user is able to select which versions to install on the system. Pretty neat right?

Someone might wonder why version 6 is in the package. GCC 6 is the last one that can be used to create optimised binaries for SPE CPUs, like the one that comes with the A1222 plus (Tabor). So, if someone is working on a project where some parts of the code use a lot of maths, this version of GCC can provide binaries that will be much faster and optimised.

In this release we included the latest version of vbcc compiler, bringing it back in the SDK. It is configured to work out of the box with the new header files as well as with newlib. So, if someone prefers to use that awesome compiler, this is much more easy to install and start using it. I'd like here to thank Dr. Volker Barthelmann and Frank Wille for working with me and for allowing the inclusion of the vbcc compiler.

More tools are now included for helping developers on a day to day work. The new Profyler by Mike Steed can be found in the Tools folder, as well as an updated version of Hieronymus developed by Mathias 'Corto' Parnaudeau is also included. And if you like to use version control systems, subversion and sgit are also part of the SDK now.

These and many more changes are done, and a more detailed list can be found in the changelog file that is included in the SDK archive. Please, don't miss to read the updated AmigaOS SDK introduction pdf file, for more details about the changes and how the provided tools and compilers can be used.

This is the first step toward having better development tools on our beloved AmigaOS 4 systems so that developers can start working as fast as possible and be productive, without the need to mess with a lot of shenanigans. And it is quite a leap. More new releases will follow.

But I didn't develop all this exceptional software that is included in this SDK release. A lot of people from our community did most of the labour work, whom I'd like to thank. Also the AmigaOS 4 development team for their support, help and advice, and the beta testers who spend hours testing all the different beta releases I created, reporting back issues. Also, I'd like to thank Hyperion Entertainment for trusting me to do this update and release it.

The new SDK 54.16 can be found on the Hyperion-Entertainment website, and be downloaded free of charge.

Happy coding everyone.
