Notes from the interview
From small town Nebraska where everyone was German and Lutheran or Catholic
bent liberal in the 60's, then turned more conservative with age.
Sees current Woke movement in context of historical religious trends.
In a book excerpt I ran across a short autobiographical chapter where he describes meeting Bultmann on a college trip to Germany. One of Benne's collegues civily challenged Bultmann as being a heretic and the reply was "I don't see it that way." Reminds me of my time at Rollins College majoring in Philosophy and Religion in the late 70's. Many of the old professors smoked pipes. It was in the waning days of a scholarly culture now seemingly long dead.
