Sunrise Season — Almost (publ. 2024-03-30)

sunrise photo (low resolution)

We have sunrises fairly often here in Fairbanks, but there is a narrow range of dates in the spring and fall when it is convenient for me to view them and to photograph them, which is when the sun is rising about 30 minutes to an hour before the start of my work shift. We are not quite there yet, but I was able to catch this nice glow at about 7am or so on this Saturday morning, looking down the street where our apartment is located.

I am still using my old Nikon S5300, and I used the dusk mode which makes the image a little more purple. I looked into replacing my S5300 with a modern hand-held pocket camera, but I couldn't find anything satisfactory that was still in production, a similar size, and better than what I already have. It seems that, since the popularization of smart phones, the market for hand-held pocket cameras has pretty much dried up. Kodak has one model still in production, but it is 5x zoom, while my S5300 is 8x zoom, and I didn't want to lose any more of my already limited zoom capability. Of course, there are plenty of professional zooming cameras available, but they are all large in size and large in cost.
