Re: PalmOS Development

gemini://gemini.panda-roux.dev/log/entry?35

Panda-roux's mention of developing for PalmOS brought back some memories. The Palm Vx I got in 2000 was a fantastic device. Batteries that lasted for weeks, apps that you could always instantly switch between, great GUI (made for stylus, not fingers), app data easily synced to your computer and without any bloat or cloud-dependencies, nothing always-online or automatically updated. The emulator and SDK was nice as well, and the OS APIs were a lot simpler than what I saw for any modern systems.

I used the plucker app for reading on PalmOS, both my Vx and later ones, pre-smartphones. Instead of using limited GSM bandwidth to browse the WWW (or WAP) in real-time from the Palm itself, plucker scraped pages and put in a database file for offline browsing. An offline gemtext/gempub reader would be possible using a similar design. I always liked to keep offline copies of everything I found worth reading anyway.
