Note #9

Greetings, programs!

Pollen is getting worse. My eyes hate me.

Strangely I haven't got any spam tonight! Not much other personal e-mail either, which is unusual. Had to look at the mail server to see that it was alright. Everything seems to be working.

This morning brings more Chatcontrol news. The EU proposal for client-side scanning of chat messages (even E2EE) is here:

https://ec.europa.eu/home-affairs/system/files/2022-05/Proposal%20for%20a%20Regulation%20laying%20down%20rules%20to%20prevent%20and%20combat%20child%20sexual%20abuse_en.pdf

I have yet to read it all but this doesn't look good. My guess is that this will force everyone offering message services to the public to change their client app to do the scanning. It will probably not affect company chats or your friendly neighbourhood XMPP.

It will be interesting to see Signal's response.

Day two of the Lund Linux Con today. When it ends I'm off to the cottage for the weekend.

Toke's lightning talk about using eBPF for traffic generation was impressive. This can be useful.

I liked Alaistair's talk about RISC-V on qemu as well, of course, but you could guess that.

The entire next week is an all-hands meeting at HQ in Gothenburg. Not really sure what that's about, yet. I was late booking my hotel since I was a bit paralyzed about what nights to book. These things are hard for me. Apparently there's a large half marathon run next week so my usual hotels were full or a lot more expensive than usual.

Swedish Pirate party

The Swedish Pirate party web site

seems down. Anyone know what has happened? In an IRC discussion I was about to refer to their stance about basic income and couldn't get through. Seems up again now, though.

Many things the Swedish Pirate party has a stance on is quite interesting. I was glad to see that they had representation in the EU parliament many years ago, but since then their representation has been minimal, even in the municipalities. This needs to change.

Emoji favicon in Gemini

Saw a strange request for favicon.txt from my Gemini server. It's probably this:

RFC: Adding Emoji Favicons to Gemini

Apparently there has been a rather heated debate about whether to allow this at all which I missed, being late to the Gemini party. I think a nice compromise is to optionally do a favicon request if you bookmark a page. This way all requests are still user initiated.

IRC bot in Modula-2

This is one of the largest recent Modula-2 program I've found:

https://gitorious.org/page-six/

It's an IRC bot using the XDS Modula-2 compiler. Not very polished, it has a lot of things like hardcoded paths, but seems to have quite a few features. Just looking at Gitorious it seems development stalled in 2006? Does the project live elsewhere these days? Anyone know?
