The Black Parade is a heart pounding collection of not-quite-punk, but not really emo, songs with dizzyingly byzantine writing, arrangement, and production. There is a glossy, melancholy sheen to the whole record, even when the vocal performance of Gerard Way is in full shrieking gear and the guitars are melting the place down. Apropos to the title, the album is not without a sense of grandeur and showmanship, which is what truly elevates it to be one of the best.
