Christina's questions for June 🤔

Christina's phlog post

What do you think we owe each other as human beings?

I'm persuaded by the Golden Rule: treat others as you would wish to be treated. I think most people are happy with this as the basis for how to treat people, but not everyone. A minority couldn't give a shit about anyone but themselves, and an awful lot of people (who would agree with this rule if asked) can be distractd by short term gain.

Has your active daydreaming or reverie ever manifested a desire of yours?

I don't think so, so instead I'll tell you about the most vivid dream I remember having. I was in the audience for a black-and-white TV show where the Beatles were playing. I was standing by Ringo's drum kit. I don't know what the song was. Sometimes people ask if you dream in colour. I suppose I do, because this dream was definitely monochrome.

What is one thing people would never know about you just by looking at you?

I once did a team building thing at work (total waste of time, but employers like them). My colleagues had to rate me on various scales. On "formal/informal" I got heavily voted "formal". Ha! I may be wearing a suit, but it's a costume. There are some other people who've only ever seen me slobbing and would have a very different view.

Also, depression doesn't (usually) show.

If you could un-invent one thing, what would it be?

I'm not a fan of aeroplanes. I don't like travelling in them. I don't like that they pollute the skies and make so much noise. Travel by train instead! And my idea of hell would be to be perpetually stuck in an airport.

What is the most profound experience you have ever had with a stranger?

I once helped a girl aged about 12 up some station stairs with heavy bags. She was with her mother who was too drunk to be any help. It seemed as though this was their normal condition: the girl looking after the mother. I knew intellectually that some people's childhood is less than ideal, but here it was in front of me, and it was starkly clear that there was nothing much I could do about this child's problems, and that she was just one among many.
