Getting a tattoo is a way of claiming your body as your temple. You may not control much in life, but you have sovereignty over your body. Dr. Clark encountered a notion that the tattoo world is sometimes known as the "church of steel" as opposed to the weak Christian "church of wood".
Dr. Clark recalls a This American Life episode about a Christian youth group at a Pennsylvania university advertising a "Raw Sex" info meeting that hid its real purpose of evangelizing whoever showed up. He recalled his own participation in an evangelization event advertised using pretty girls in bikinis handing out flyers for a "luau on the beach". The event was actually some karaoke interspersed with testimonials and invitations to huddle with on site worship leaders. The technique is commonly known as bait and switch and is a form of false witness. It stems in part from a deep felt need to control others.
