Books I'm Reading

THE 5 YEARS BEFORE YOU RETIRE

by Emily Guy Birken

Just about at the end of this book and I feel like I'm no better off than when I started. I'm not sure who the target reader is (beyond being within 5 years of retirement) but it seems to be directed toward people with plenty of financial resources who are somehow able to fit 15 years worth of action into 5 years. Good advice is always good advice, but to me it reads like advice you should read 15 years before you retire.

DIGITAL MINIMALISM

by Cal Newport

Lots of information about the possible negative effects of the world "going digital". He isn't just complaining and lamenting the ill effects but goes into some depth on the benefits of minimizing your digital footprint as well as the positive outcomes of a life less dependent on tech.

ZEN AND THE ART OF MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE

by Robert M. Pirsig

I'm only about 60 pages (out of 455) into this one, but I think I'm going to enjoy it. I ride and thus far the author has spent the first 60 pages describing the "riding experience" as he develops the characters. So far the only characters are himself and his son, a friend and his friend's wife. We'll see how it goes.

HEAD FIRST PYTHON

by Paul Barry

I'm liking this one. I can't put my finger on it, but the approach/examples keep you just off-center. They're helpful although presented in a little unexpected way.

WALDEN

by Henry David Thoreau

I read a few chapters and honestly, I know I'm supposed to like and appreciate it, but I have not felt compelled to pick it up again for some time now.
