The Wild and Unusual Things People Have Put in Their Wills

by Emma Cooper

There is nothing quite as confronting as having to deal with a loved one’s will and testament when they depart… And let’s be honest, whilst the passing of someone is hard to come to terms with, having to deal with rude relatives and harsh lawyers is no walk in the park. From insensitive suggestions to wild propositions, we have collected the most shocking and confusing will and testament stories from across the web. Pretty much, here lies a list of what not to do when you are writing your will and testament…

1: Playing Favorites

For many people, the idea of saying goodbye to a parent is a horrible and unfathomable thing to try and comprehend. But whilst some people have a good and stable relationship with their parents, that isn’t the case for everyone. But even estranged family members need to be mentioned in the will…

We’re not sure what happened between these family members, but the fact that these parents left everything to their daughter and only $1 to their son is pretty brutal. Clearly, something pretty serious happened in this family dynamic, but these parents knew what they were doing by leaving their son such little money…

2: Furby Didn’t Make a Comeback

In life, it can be really hard knowing what possessions are worth keeping in the long run and which aren’t… Every family has a story of a piece of furniture, a property, or a gold necklace that they didn’t keep that would now be worth a lot of money. Well, this heirloom might not be a house, but this person had the right idea.

Look, if this person didn’t keep their entire Furby collection from the 90s, and Furby was worth a lot of money today, then that would have been pretty frustrating… If only this entire collection could have been something a little bit more valuable, like designer shoes or handbags…

3: Mom and Daughter Feud

Everyone knows that when it comes to mothers and daughters, often things can get a little bit complicated. Sure, some of these relationships run smoothly without too many hiccups or anything along the way, but that isn’t the case for the majority of people out there.

The fact that this woman doesn’t even want one of her daughters to know when she dies is intense. We understand not leaving her anything, but not warning her about the death until a week later seems like a big deal. But hey, each family has their own reasons and their own stuff to deal with…

4: Leave the Eyes Alone…

When it comes to parting with our loved ones, it is never an easy thing to do. However, there are some ways that these people can somehow live on through others… With organ donation, people who are no longer with us have the ability to share their organs with others that desperately need them.

Seeing as this person’s mother-in-law is already an organ donor, she knows the benefits of what this could mean for someone else. But when it comes to her eyes, she has given strict instructions not to let anyone near them. Because even though she might be gone, she still wants to see where she’s going…

5: Don’t Take Me For a Fool

One of the hardest things about marriage is the idea that you are meant to be with the same person forever. And whilst there are many wonderful things about this concept, there are also difficult things. Because if you aren’t honest with each other, you never know what the other person is thinking…

This man’s wife thought that he had no idea about her affair throughout the years. But it wasn’t until he wrote his will that she became aware of just how much he knew… Sure, she might have been pretty upset about this outcome, but it seems like her son was probably more deserving of this money.

6: Not-So-Friendly-Reminder

Is there anything more annoying than when someone owes you money and just never gives it back to you? People always act like they will repay what they owe you, but it never turns out like that in the end. One way or another, one person is always begging the other for the money back.

Seeing as this woman never got her $20 back from her daughter, she decided to leave her a little surprise in the will. We’re not sure if she only left her daughter a total sum of $20 or gave her more money throughout the agreement, but all we know is that this would have been a funny thing to witness.

7: Anything For the Donkeys

More often than not, when it comes to people dealing with family estates and wills, it is usually the family members that receive most of the assets. Sure, there are plenty of people out there who don’t have anyone to leave their money to, so they choose something different. But when you have family, you assume the money will go to them…

Well, that’s not what happened in this particular story. This person’s great-grandmother decided to leave most of her money to a donkey sanctuary instead of gifting it to her family… We have nothing against donkeys or anything like that; it’s just that this seems like an odd thing to do…

8: You Get What You Deserve

When it comes to loved ones passing, people are either devastated about the loss or eager to find out what they made from the situation. So many people out there care far less about the person than they do about what their inheritance is going to look like…

But if you have always been someone that was just in it for the money and the prestige, then chances are you are going to be received that way. This man knew his son would be expecting a lot from his will, so he decided to make sure he was going to get nothing.

9: Brother From Another Mother

Generally speaking, every family has secrets in the closet, no matter how normal you think they might be. Growing up, we always think that it is just our families that are weird and don’t seem normal, but as you get older, you slowly begin to realize that isn’t actually the case…

This guy probably thought that his family wasn’t too strange until he realized that he had an adopted brother he had never met… Why did this guy’s dad never tell him about this long-lost brother he had? It would be a pretty wild thing to find out so late in life.

10: Grandma’s Favorite

In every family, there is always going to be a favorite sibling, child, or grandkid. And as much as people try and deny that this is a thing that people do, everyone knows deep down who this person is in their own family. And after this will was public, we’re pretty sure everyone in this family knew who the favorite was as well.

Can you imagine if you’re own grandma only left a single penny for everyone in her will but, for some reason, gave you $1000? Well, that’s what happened to this person, and it’s pretty safe to say that they won the jackpot. It’s pretty clear who the favorite was in this family…

11: More in Common Than You Think

When it comes to family, some people feel as though they have nothing in common with some of their relatives. Especially when they are a little bit older than you… But the older you get, the more you realize that there is so much more to some people than meets the eye.

For example, this person had no idea that their great aunt was as crazy for bugs as they themselves were! This person’s great-aunt somehow knew that their niece or nephew had such a strong connection with insects that she decided to leave her with a small keep-sake always to remember her by.

12: Pass it On

The very nature of what going through someone else’s will entails is just so eery. Knowing that this person went through all of their assets and carefully picked out what they wished for every person in their life is creepy as well as incredibly loving. So if anyone has an issue with what they receive, they can just move on…

This person has already decided for when the time comes, if someone in their will has any issue with what they have left them, they can politely decline the offer and give it to someone else. We’re pretty sure anything is better than what you are left with after $1 goes through postage and handling…

13: Enjoy the Cats…

Waiting for someone you love to leave this Earth so that you can get an inheritance is so weird… Sure, people aren’t often waiting for their loved ones to pass, but the fact that they know that they will receive something in the long run, is weird. So what are you meant to do when you don’t get what you always thought was rightfully yours?

Can you imagine expecting to get a hearty inheritance from your parents to realize you have only been given the two cats you gifted them in the first place? Everyone else gets millions of dollars and fancy artwork, and you get to enjoy the company of two old cats.

14: Paranoid Mother

Why is it that mothers always seem to be amongst the most paranoid people on this planet? No matter where they are from or what they do, all mothers tend to worry about their children in one way or another. However, it seems like this particular mother worries about her children in a completely different way…

Considering that this woman is worried about this at all is kind of strange… Who is worried that their own children would want to kill them? It seems like this woman needs to get off Netflix and start spending some quality time with her kids so that she doesn’t get any more paranoid.

15: Let’s Have a Bonfire

There is no denying that when it comes to family feuds, most people have them… Sure, it might sound silly that this is still something people are dealing with, especially with their own families, but hey, just because we love our family members doesn’t mean we know how to act all the time appropriately.

This person received strict instructions that when their grandfather dies, they are to take specific furniture and burn it to the ground. Sometimes, families can lose sight of what is important when a loved one passes. And all people want is a little slice of the antique cake…

16: This One Is For You, Elvis

Is there anything quite as sad as to when someone reaches the end of their life without any loved ones? It’s the kind of thing you see happen in movies but don’t expect actually to happen in real life. Because imagining that someone would actually get to this stage of life is pretty depressing…

Well, this person’s uncle actually did end up exactly like this… Apparently, he was a wealthy man that had no one to leave all of his fortunes to, so instead, he left everything he had (which was a lot) to an Elvis impersonator. Can you imagine knowing this happened as a relative of his?

17: Contents of the Outhouse

When it comes to people leaving things behind once they pass, they aren’t always concerned with making sure that no one gets offended by what they leave them or how they phrase it. Because let’s be honest when you have had to always deal with annoying people, all you want to do is be annoying back.

And that is exactly what this man decided to do when he left the contents of his outhouse to the city council nearby. Who needs anything from an outhouse? No one… But this man had been caught up in of years different land disputes with the council, that when he passed, he thought what better way to mark the occasion than to do something like this.
