I have been testing a default UK telephone number block (+44 numbers).

This notice is addressed to all on my list of contacts (those who exist in my current list of contacts, and those gaining exemption subsequently).

This is an explanation of the how and why. Please read, understand, and question if necessary!

This block is intended to be effective immediately after I leave the UK. Based on a technology similar to a “firewall default disallow” rule, all UK numbers are to be blocked by default (but logged).

What does “default block” mean?

It means that all those entries in my contact list at this time are already on the exemption list, (you have no reason to fear loss of contact with me)! For new UK contacts, you have to be added to the exemption list subsequently, or your call will not be connected.

Why am I doing this?

For privacy and security reasons. Further details will not be provided at this time. This will be reviewed in the future.

What need existing contacts do to be on the exemption list?

Nothing! You are already on this list.

What do new contacts need to do to gain exemption?

I will already have your contact details by other means, and you will be added to the exemption list if you fall into one or more of the following groups.

 Family

 Friends

 Friends of family

 People who deal with the above in a professional capacity (e.g. education, medical, administrative)

 Others on a case by case basis after vetting.

What is happening to the contact details you have for me?

 My existing UK number is retained for a transition period; the withdrawl date will be Publicised later

 I have a dual sim phone. In the transition period, my existing number will remain operational; a country specific number provided when known

 A forwarding postal address will be provided to those with a valid need

 Overseas address available to those on the above contact list (in Burkina Faso the system is to address to the local postmaster for collection; and in China temporary address will be provided

 Email addresses will be subject to review at a later time – notice will be given

 And the worldwide secure two-way radio network will not be affected – it is already vetted! If you are already using it you have been vetted already; so it is not something which happens by accident.

What about the long term?

An international number will be provided for emergency and urgent use, I will be contactable in any country if an issue warrants it. And a country specific number will be available when I am in that country to avoid roaming costs. For reference, the code for China is +86 and Burkina Faso is +226. I may spend time in others for work purposes, details to follow later.

Any questions or issues? Please let me know in advance.

David
