The Ruins of Beverast - The Thule Grimoires

2021, Ván. Metal.

Full album on Youtube

As always, this album both feels unique in the TROB discography and in the metal landscape, but also obviously in the continuation of his previous works, especially the slow and gradual focus on ambiances rather than riffs that keeps getting more and more refined since Blood Vaults. "Ropes Into Eden" opens the album by borrowing a guitar line from a previous song, discomforting and malevolent. "The Tundra Shines" is a dramatic ode to the sealing frost, with acclamations of choirs sounding both afraid and in awe of the tundra. "Kromlec'h Knell" keeps the slow pace, evokes ancient curses and debilitating trances. There is a strange game with the listener as the tone plays back and forth between thrilling and frightening melodies. "Mammothpolis" is an interlude that uses some electronic sounds (he should do that more often!). "Anchoress In Furs" is more straightforward in its tragedy, with its laments and tribal rhythms leading to a bleak conclusion. "Polar Hiss Hysteria" suddenly bursts, as if the previous fascinations ultimately turned into madness. "Deserts To Bind And Defeat" brings gothic elements to close the album with a brutal, hopeless, immense spectacle, fading in the grim liturgy of "To Helios".

All in all, this is a very solid album.
