20210717 WWI

On the wall I have also a small photo from my great-grandfather. It is from WWI. He was already in his forties and had a family and kids, but he was drafted all the same. We have lots of letters he wrote his family from the front and a couple of pictures of him in uniform. This picture shows him with comrades. He was 2 meters tall and when you see him with his comrades it's almost funny to see how small the others are. Their uniforms look neat. Nobody is smiling. My great-grandfather was a traveling salesman and he was good in languages. That's why he served as translator during the war. So no trenches for him and it's the main reason he survived the war. To me the photo is a reminder that we can be thankful for all those decades of relative peace that lie behind us.
