who am i?

added 30 may 2020

i'm lel (he/him/his). i live in very upstate ny. i'm a marxist, specifically i'm into communization a la endnotes[1], so i'm an ultra, but without the class reductionism and a few other not insignificant distinctions. in a break with, well, at least what endnotes has written (i haven't seen them ever say anything about it), i'm also pro decol and i don't think imperialism is all that good i tell ya what. as a consequence i get called a tankie two or three times a day on twitter.

as far as tech goes, i've been running linucks since 2010 or 2011 or something along those lines. my distro progression (please hold your laughter until the end) was:

arch (like a week lol)

gentoo (4 years)

slackware (2 years)

debian (4 years)

gentoo (like a year)

nixos (lmao, like june 2021 -> present)

that's right, the only non-meme distro i ever used was debian and i quit using it. in all honesty, gentoo was the happiest i had ever been on loonix and i'd been chasing that dragon ever since, but the install takes so long and i was worried that if there was some weird incompatibility i'd just be out of like 5 hours of waiting for compilation and be forced to reinstall debian. of course i ended up doing it, and in the several years since i'd last used it, rust had so thoroughly infested the open source world that the rust compiler being so slow (i do like rust i stg) had actually made all the memes about gentoo updates taking hours come true. nixos has almost all of the features i liked about gentoo with several really neat additional features of its own, and it's far simpler to maintain. flakes are cool.

i like writing in go. my favorite text editor is plan9port's acme, but that's primarily when i'm writing a whole project or something. in other situations, or when i'm stuck without it, i use vim. i don't understand how people can use nano. nano is literally windows's notepad with less functionality and without a mouse. i don't understand how someone uses that. complete nonsense. meanwhile, emacs is a bunch of bullshit. the key chords are so outdated that i wonder if the reason they're so weird is that they're designed for dinosaur hands.

i'm super excited about gemini and i hope others will be too! it's a great little community and i'm happy it's exploded since that hn post!!! edit: lmao ive watched gemini grow from a very small mailing list into something a non-techie friend of mine irl mentioned to me without me ever having talked to him about it

you can email me at lel (@) envs.net if you want to yell at me about being an evil communist or because i dunked on your favorite text editor while preferring the absolute meme that is acme.

thanks a lot, folks --
