First Month Retrospective

I’ve been posting daily for a little over a month now; I guess I like it here.

As well as writing, I’ve been reading. Actually, the biggest change for me after finding Gemini has been swapping Lagrange for Chrome on my phone.

By that I mean, Lagrange now sits in the super-convenient spot for most-used apps, and Chrome has been relegated to a “util” folder.

I’ve stopped browsing daily news—tech or otherwise—and read gemlogs instead.

Slowing Down

I think I’ve found a new appreciation for when the web is a positive thing and when it isn’t.

The web is incredibly useful for some specific tasks: for finding information, for online shopping, for filing taxes.

It’s also full of advertising, spam and addictive patterns.

Writing

I’m surprised by how much it turns out I have to write. I like gemlogging! Who knew.

My posts have been more like “articles” than “journal entries”; I haven’t really shared a lot that is personal, certainly much less than the average gemlogger. I’m not sure if that’s working as intended, or might drift over time. Because I work for a large company I’m used to carefully restrained and fine-tuned online communication. I don’t know whether that’s what I enjoy or whether it’s just habit. That’s fine; I’m in no particular rush to find out, I’ll just keep writing what seems worth writing.

The Bubble

The hot topic in Geminispace right now is the new social website from skyjake; I already commented with

Who Likes The Likers

and in particular, whether a channel for slightly easier interaction with Gemlogs might be desirable

I Want To Say Thank You

but the community is apparently more interested in whether centralization should be a concern.

On this point I’m going to weigh in with a resounding “not worried”.

The setup today with independent capsules discovered via aggregators seems reasonably robust; but more than that, there is a very high degree of software expertise among Gemini users.

So, if there’s ever a need for a software or networking solution to save Geminispace then I’m sure it’ll happen.

For now though it seems I can just enjoy things as they are. I experimented with using Bubble s/discuss to post short replies to Gemlog entries; I plan on continuing to do that, reserving my own Gemlog for “long form” content.
